Chess System Tal 2.02 upgrade

Post by chrisw »

Chess System Tal 2.02 upgrade.

Fixes issue some people had with numbers of cores and threads, fixes the random and occasional hang issue. Might be slightly faster than the original, but apart from that no internal changes.i did manage to sort out the .nnue.bin include into the compile, the old version was compiled with .nnue.bin inline but by a terrible workaround because I couldn’t work out how to get round the Microsoft compiler bitching about include.bin file size. Now fixed. Executables are now much smaller.

You can download it from https://whittingtonchess.com/

Comments and gripes in this thread only please. I’ll attend to any issues raised in first few days if any (for example thread_max is set to 64), and might then create the EAS and Extreme versions.

Just a little note, since I’m laptop/internet nomadic I’ve little access to either the original sources or the original xxx.nnue’s. The main source was reconstituted from GitHub and Ed, neither (I suspect) match entirely the old release version, but heavy testing indicates the engine is the same, almost, it is probably actually a dev version from after the original release but seems equivalent, as far as I can tell. Nnues’s were a different matter altogether, none available at all, and finally reconstituted by reverse engineering them out of old release versions. This seems to have worked. If not, generating exact feature and bug fixed copies will have to await me being back in France.

Thanks for the update!

So far (325 positions tested) one crash with this one study from O.Pervakov & A.Stavrietsky:

4k2r/3Rp1p1/1Kp1P3/Pp1P2b1/4R3/P4P2/1p4q1/1Q5r w k - 0 1

Tried it in cb-GUIs as well as in console repeatedly, each time error message from GUI or simply closing of console- window, regards
Peter.

Ok, thanks. I assume AVX2 version? Can you tell me what crashed exactly? Loading the position, or go movetime xxxx, or something else?

avx512 compile, as well single thread as with 6 and with 30 threads of 16x4.3GHz Ryzen 9950X3D CPU, Windows11.
In cb- GUI error message "this is a problem in the engine" in infinite analysis (with confirming the message, GUI and engine go on working with change of position), in console with go infinite window closes.
Peter.

Thanks for that. Very old and obscure bug, well done. Fixed and credited.

New Release is now 2.03 and available at https://whittingtonchess.com/

Hi Bert,

Yes, its the same bug as fixed now for CSTal 2.03, which doesn't help you until Ed also updates the bug fixes and recompiles. Looks like we didn't set the compiler up quite correctly because it leaves in some stray asserts which ought not to be there (speed reasons, amongst other things).

Thanks.

Howdy Chris. If this all gonna happen I'm a lucky man. In the last monthly tournament on Nightmarechess the engine suffered from this bug 7 times.... The gui loses connection to the engine but time is running still. So this bug doesn't happen only in weird postions (thanks Peter) but also often in games.

Apart from this thanks for the nice aggressive framework. Nice craftsmanship from you en Ed.

Ouch!

Okay, I just need to ensure with Ed that the fixes are in his version, and it will be up to him to recompile. I could do it if I had the nnue’s, but I don’t. As a last resort I could extract them out of your executables but would rather not! Anyway, I don’t actually have his diverged source.
We’ll wait on Ed.

Re: Chess System Tal 2.02 upgrade

Post by PHILOCHESS »

Many thanks, Chris, for this new release.

I have downloaded both 2.04 versions and will include them together in my upcoming engine tournaments and opening-book research. The E1162-EAS version is especially interesting to me because of its more Tal-like attacking style, while the E1019 version will also be very useful as a point of comparison.

It is great to see Chess System Tal being updated and refined. I really appreciate the work behind it, especially the effort to keep such a distinctive engine alive.

Best regards,
Robert
