Chess variant tournament: Makruk (without endgame counting)

Post by enhorning »

It's been quite a few months since the last variant tournament I ran, but my life is settling down again after moving between countries, and I think it's time to finally run that Makruk tournament I was intending.

It will be run through WinBoard, and not using the endgame counting rules, as that is the way Makruk is implemented in WinBoard.

I know of the following engines that play Makruk:

Fairy-Max 4.8(w)
Nebiyu 1.45
Sjaak r524
Bilis 0.14 (Deuterium relative)

... possibly H.G. Muller's other engines?

I will run with smaller hash tables than I did in the past, to enable me to run multiple game concurrent in daytime while still using the computer.

I am going to run one more round of my Survival of the Fittest vanilla chess tournament before this, so the Makruk tournament will start in about a week or so.

My engine for large Shogi variants, HaChu, also plays Makruk. And I just developed a patch for Fairy-Max on request of a Thai Makruk player, to fix the fact that it could not win the end-games KMMMK and KNMMK (like M), which seem to be common in Makruk. I am not sure, however, if I should put that patch in Fairy-Max or in Pair-o-Max (which, after all, is the version of Fairy-Max with enhanced end-game knowledge). Which then could be an argument to have Pair-o-Max participate as a separate engine.

My opinion for these variants tournament is generally the more participants, the better. So, I would welcome both pair-o-max and Fairy-max as separate participants.

Do you have download links to relevant version of HaChu and Pair-o-Max? (No rush, like I said, I am planning another round of my vanilla tournament, so about a week, before moving on to Makruk.)

I've installed all the programs - there will be six participants:

Bilis 0.14
Fairy-Max 4.8S
Fairy-Max 4.8S+ (aka MateMax, has extra Makruk endgame knowledge)
HaChu 0.17
Nebiyu 1.45
Sjaak 524

Time control will be 40 moves in 20 minutes, repeating, and hash will be 128 MB. The tournament will be a 10-fold round-robin, so 50 games / program, 150 games in total, with each pairing playing both sides of the following five openings (suggested by running the various programs for a long time from the starting position):

1. Nd2
1. Ne2
1. Kc2
1. c4
1. Mf2

The super-blitz tournament I ran to test things went mostly smoothly - there was one loss due to an illegal move:

... move 93 looks weird - surely that should be a6=M ?

Also, FairyMax / MateMax still sometimes get stuck thinking for too long, and lost a couple of games on time. I also had some Winboard crashes when starting up new games (old game finished, written to the pgn, and new game marked with a * in the trn-file, but WB still displaying the final position from the old game).

Results from the super-blitz (40/1) test tournament:

... so, looks like we're in for quite a close battle between Nebiyu and Bilis.

Going to start the tournament proper now!

Re: Chess variant tournament: Makruk (without endgame counti

Post by enhorning »

About the openings:

1. Nd2 is Nebiyu's choice from ply 20-26, and HaChu's choice from ply 15-17.

1. Ne2 is Nebiyu's choice from ply 9-19, Bilis's choice from ply 12-15, and HaChu's choice at ply 14.

1. Kc2 is Bilis's choice from ply 16-20

1. c4 is Sjaak's choice from ply 17-18

1. Mf2 is Sjaak's choice from ply 13-14 and 16.

FairyMax / MateMax had no consistent choices - I presume due to their randomization in the opening.
