WCRCC-Report

Post by Roman Hartmann »

First I would like to thank Charles for organizing the tournament. I was under the impression that the whole tournament went pretty smoothly.

Even though I was aware that Roce is still no match for any serious engine I wanted to participate in the WCRCC again. The version I had to play this year is about 100 points stronger than the version I used in 2007.

The tour report below is not for the weak at heart. It's mainly a tale of terrible losses. I guess I will need to report the wins in another year.

The first 2 games were vs Yace and vs Messchess and they looked like games look if one side gets outsearched by several plies. The losses were unavoidable.

The third game was vs Matilde. In that game the score jumped suddenly dramatically and Roce thought for some time that it had found a tactical shot. It gave away a pawn and then even a bishop still giving a huge positive score. After those sacs the score dropped and I realized there must be a bug. Due the early loss I had some time between the rounds to fix that problem, recompile and make sure the next games are played withoug that bug at least. The bug was related to nullmove (condition when not to nullmove) and only surfaces in longer searches and as I was using 1+1 games lately for testing so I never spotted that particular one.

The 4th game was vs Prophet and Roce made at least one very odd move when it choose to move the king instead to move the queen to defend a pawn. This behaviour resulted again in a loss.

The 5th game was vs Oxygen and again Roce got outsearched badly. The opening and middlegame still looked not that bad though.

The 6th game was vs Buzz and again the middlegame was almost ok but Roce did not see that the two pawns on the a and b file couldn't be stopped after an exchange of the queens. The game was probably lost even before the queens were exchanged though.

The 7th game was vs Hfc and at some point in the middlegame Roce started shuffling the pieces around. No good idea if the opposing engine is a good deal stronger. Misplaced pieces in combination with seeing the threat from promoting pawns too late Roce lost this game as well.

The 8th game vs Neurosis was already lost in the opening. Not that Roce would have won vs Neurosis with another opening but due the particular opening the game was dead lost by around move 17 already.

The 9th game was vs Noonianchess and that game resulted in a 3-fold repetition by move 13. Roce saw itself behind after the opening moves and went for the 3-fold by attacking the queen with a bishop. Not sure if Noonianchess saw the 3-fold coming as the kibitzed score didn't indicate this.

The 10th game was vs Horizon-X and in that game Roce forced a queen exchange not seeing that the walk of pawns to promotion cannot be stopped afterwards.

The 11th game vs BertaX was lost early in the game already. Roce not really caring about pawn structure lost pawn after pawn and with that also the game.

The 12th game vs Romichess was one of the worst games for Roce. The position looked cramped very early in the game and certain pieces couldn't be developed at all during the whole game.

The 13th game vs Joker was even worse than the one vs Romichess. Several pieces couldn't be developed, the king was exposed to attacks early in the game and all of that resulted in a rather terrible loss for Roce.

The game vs Timea looked less spectacular than the two previous games but Roce got outsearched again, of course, and Timea was slowly building up pressure and winning the game.

Best regards
Roman

Below -just for completeness- the games (even though I can't think of a reason why anyone would want them):

That's what matters, getting better and being able to beat yourself ;)

I dont think Roman actually cares about the strength of the engine. I think his goal was to create something a human can defeat on a good day. I was able to get occasional draws against Roce, but now it also seemed to have crossed over to the dark side. At least Roce didnt have any outstanding flaws that prevents it from winning against an opponent that's within its strength range..
