Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 games

Post by tpoppins »

Komodo 10.3
table memory=1024 MB
contempt=0

Stockfish 170102 x64 POPCNT
custom build with large pages and NUMA support
display of fail-highs and fail-lows suppressed
same bench as master branch

Common settings:
4096 MB hash
5-men syzygy on SSD
Syzygy probe depth=1
all other settings at default

Dual Xeon E5-2670 2.6 GHz
40 GB RAM
16 cores/16 threads
Hyperthreading OFF in BIOS
Win 7 x64 Pro SP1
Fritz 15.21 GUI

Book - a CTG conversion of 8moves_GM_LB.pgn (Lucas Braesch's version of Adam Hair's original, filtered for the Fishtest)
Book options:
variety of play=250
learning options off
The engines play every opening position with both colors once.

Time control - 60m+6s (i.e. about 2h 20m for a game)
Games automatically terminated after 80 moves, to be manually adjudicated or played off at 30m+3s at the end of the match.

So, why yet another K-SF match? Dozens of those around already, right?. Yes, but few of them are LTC, yet fewer test multicore scaling beyond four cores. In some ways this match is similar to TCEC: games that last hours, with the search depth coming out of the book in low 30s, mid-30s in the middlegame and endgames going past 40.

Yet thanks to the book the games are quite different. With the GUI picking the openings randomly for each round of two games it's like a box of chocolates. And what an odd assortment it is: fans of top-GM play may be sorely disappointed with the complete absence of the fashionable Ruy Lopezes, Gruenfelds and Semi-Slavs; on the other hand when was last time you saw a top GM (or any GM for that matter) destroy another GM with 1.b4, a piece sacrifice and a king hunt - all in the same game?

Round 1
ECO: A00
Kind of a cross between the Reti and the Sokolsky. Slow play with plenty room for heavyweight positional maneuvering. The first game transposes into what may be a Symmetrical English; the second is a Botvinnik System that ends in a lazy Grandmaster draw. ;)

Round 2
A00 - Sokolsky/Orangutang with 1...e5

Not a serious opening, you might think. See game 4 then - SF steadily builds pressure on the queenside, posts a rook on c5 (move 56) - presumably targeting the weak a5 pawn - and suddenly sacrifices a piece on the kingside on the next move. A king hunt ensues that features another sacrifice (this time of the exchange), and it's not until nine moves (!) later that Komodo realizes that it's completely lost (see the eval swing from 0.32 to 3.77 between moves 66 and 67).

Alekhine-like play.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Round 4
B07 - Pirc Defence

Game 7 went all the way to the 80-move limit and ended in a curious position with unusual material balance - a rook and a knight vs. two knights, a bishop and a pawn. Both engines evaluate it as a Black win but I have a hunch that at playoff it will end in a draw.

Game 8 saw SF generate kingside play out of nothing, only to overestimate its chances and pull the trigger too early (30.hxg6). Kudos to Komodo for not getting scared and staying alert.

Round 5
A53 - Old Indian Defence

Game 9 is unfinished. It's hard to imagine anything but a draw to result from the final position, although I'm still planning a playoff, if only to see how long it will take each engine to reach the 0.00 score and avoid accusations of favoritism. The game saw Komodo obtain a nice position with two bishops but too many exchanges lead to a symmetric QB+pawns endgame with an extra doubled pawn that K futilely tried to win for 46 moves.

Game 10 also saw White get a nice game with the bishop pair, however this time it was Black who had an extra doubled (and isolated) pawn and there was nothing futile about the way SF demonstrated a win.

Score so far: 2.5-5.5 (+0-3=5 ?2)

edit: thank you for looking in, Arun. I thought an LTC match of this caliber (and with such offbeat openings, too) deserved more than a PGN dump. Glad to hear someone appreciates that.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Round 6
C00 - French Exchange

Game 11 never strayed far from equality. On move 17 Komodo offered a poisoned pawn that SF was wise not to grab. At the end of the endgame Black initiated complications that could have easily led a human to slip up; Komodo coolly ignored a piece offer and easily held the draw.

Game 12 was somewhat less adventurous, with Komodo reporting 0.00 as early as move 18. In the final position humans would likely go on for another dozen moves or two until things simplified some more; with both engines reporting 0.00 for five consecutive moves it's an automatic draw.

Score: 3.5-6.5 (+0-3=7 ?2)

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Round 7
B07 - Modern Defence

Game 13 - an early exchange on e5 resulted in an even game, one where a better Black player has all the winning chances, for psychological reasons. That's between humans, of course. With the engines there's no psychology, you wouldn't expect Komodo to overreach trying to win from such a position (not with contempt=0, at least). Nevertheless there was a sharp skirmish towards the end where for a moment it looked like White was going to clean up most of the black pawns, but SF had everything covered with tactics.

In game 14 Komodo was ready for a draw as early as move 16. With the weak black pawn on c5 SF was willing to test the opponent's endurance, though. For much of the game Komodo was content to sit tight with its 0.00 and a big lead in time, while SF basically shuffled around waiting for a mistake. Curiously, it was Komodo who initiated complications this time by opening the queenside on move 54 and two moves later offering a pawn that White could (and did) take with a check. A razor-sharp battle ensued, with pieces and exchanges hanging left and right, before things settled to an honorable draw.

Score: 4.5-7.5 (+0-3=9 ?2)

Round 8
C00 - French Chigorin

Game 15 was curious positionally. Coming out of the book White could have played c3, when the position would resemble an Alapin Sicilian, with an unusual development of the white queen to e3. Instead, Komodo opted for an equally odd-looking 9.Bd3, castled long and didn't hesitate to open the queenside in front of its own king. SF eschewed castling altogether and "developed" its king to e7, the board full of pieces notwithstanding. There were multiple pawn offers on both sides, including in the final position, that failed to disturb the balance as both engines knew better than to accept them.

Engine games like this remind me of the Jerry Seinfeld standup about two jaded magicians half-heartedly trying to impress each other:
- Here is a rabbit ...
- I believe this is your watch?...
- Why don't we just saw each other in half and call it a day?

When given the white side of the same position SF opted for a more plausible-looking 9.b3, but then found nothing better than play that same Bd3 on the next move. It didn't adopt Komodo's sharp b4, Black quickly took firm hold of the center and the result was another GM draw.

Score: 5.5-8.5 (+0-3=11 ?2)
