Alternative solutions and some hard endgames testsuite

I ran the 250 Endgame test suite by Aser Huerga with many engines. First with 1 thread and 10 seconds and no EGTB, then I chose the toughest positions and gave the engines 1 minute to solve. Also, I re-test all the positions that Stockfish 7 and Komodo 9.3 could not find under those conditions. This time I used 3 threads for each and also 5 men syzygy.

Position 141

According to Komodo 9.3, Rc5+ is also a solution. ChessOk site with Nalimov EGTB also confirm this (mate in 30), Syzygy site says both are the best option.

Engines like Houdini 4, Strelka 5.5, IvanHoe 9.46h, Texel 1.06a34, Cheng 4.39, Rodent 1.7, Yace Padeborn, Minko 1.3, KnightDreamer 3.3, Nemo 1.01, Loop 2007, Ktulu 9, Baron 3.29 to name some, solve this easily (1 thread, less than 10 seconds,) but Stockfish 7 and Komodo 9.3 could not find the solution after more than 90 minutes with 3 cores and 5 men syzygy each.

They prefer the move hxg7 with +0.00 eval.

Peter, how do I get mate in 70 fast with Texel?

You need to use both 6-men syzygy and 5-men gaviota tablebases at the same time. You also need to use 1.06a40 (which you did) because earlier versions made no serious attempts to handle the 50-move draw rule correctly.

I don't know if all GUIs allow using syzygy and gaviota tablebases at the same time. I usually either use

1. xboard and polyglot+texel and specify the tablebase paths in the polyglot.ini file

or

2. DroidFish on an android phone and use the network engine feature to run the engine on a PC.

Peter, how do I get mate in 70 fast with Texel?

You need to use both 6-men syzygy and 5-men gaviota tablebases at the same time.

Actually for this particular position you obviously only need 5-men syzygy because the starting position only has 5 pieces. In general though you should use full syzygy and full gaviota tablebases to help texel find shorter mates faster.
