Re: Defence vs. Attack

Post by tpoppins »

In November 2015 I posted on chessgames.com some detailed analysis on the ramification of the 24.Qxe5 queen sacrifice. This was just the tip of the iceberg of the much more extensive (over 12 hours) analysis I had to perform to get convincing (high eval at high depth) entries on Let's Check in dozens of variations that emanate from that position.

The engine I used at the time was Houdini 4 Pro in Tactical Mode with a 32 GB hash. In 2016 I was able to replicate the results with an April 2016 SF dev build and later with Komodo 9.2 and 10.1. In October I went through the whole thing yet again with the then-current CorChess (SF fork tuned for LTC) version and then, with all the backward-sliding analysis still in the hash, let it sit for over 15 hours on the root position to generate a top entry with sufficient depth (68) to deter casual patzers from overwriting it in the foreseeable future. For comparison Louis Zulli (where the hell is he, BTW?) went "only" to d=52 in April 2015.

Good thing, too, because last month the entries ##2 and 3 were overwritten with 24.Qa3 courtesy of recent SF dev builds, complete with 0.00 evals. I won't name the user who did that as he's a long-time poster here who certainly should know better (seeing how the 2015 posts on Chessgames back-linked to a long thread about this position here) and at least had enough sense (or not enough patience ;) not to overwrite the top d=68 entry. Another of our posters here (one of the most prolific ones) "contributed" a -0.38 entry for the position after 24.Qxe5 only yesterday. Ugh ... looks like I'll have to set a whole day aside for going in there and cleaning up the mess ... yet again. Now you can see why my nym on Chessbase is Never_Again, heh.

Now to Bernhard's question - does 29...cxb3 (not 29...bxc3 - illegal and sloppy, sorry, Bernhard) draw? Perhaps it does, but the question is irrelevant because two moves earlier White has a crucial improvement in 28.a4! I refer you to the third part of the above-mentioned analysis on Chessgames for details.

The bottom line is that after 24.Qxe5 White wins in all variations. The only engines that could crack this position in reasonable amount of time that I am aware of were Sting 6 and Houdini 4 Pro in Tactical mode. The latter did it just once and I wasn't able to reproduce that fluke (no log either, sorry). Komodo with null-move pruning turned off can also do it but takes considerably longer. Finally, vanilla SF may be able to do it in Multi-PV=x (where x should probably be at least 12) but that would probably take days.

Some excerpts from the analysis logs in my archives:

edit: Mike Libanan just posted a good "manual" analysis of the position after 29...cxb3 at the end of the previous page of this thread - don't miss it.

First let me apologize for my illegal and sloppy notation.
Thanks for your analysis.
Following Mike Libanan's analysis I came to the following game.

[Event "GAME VARIANT"]
[Site "Chelyabinsk RUS"]
[Date "1946.??.??"]
[Round "5"]
[White "Yuri S Gusev"]
[Black "E Auerbach"]
[Result "1-0"]
[BlackElo "2400"]
[ECO "B70"]
[Opening "Sicilian"]
[Variation "Dragon, 6.Be2 Bg7 7.O-O Nc6 8.Nb3"]
[WhiteElo "2400"]
[Termination "normal"]
[PlyCount "81"]
[WhiteType "COMPUTER"]
[BlackType "cOMPUTER"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be2 Nc6 7. Nb3 Bg7
8. O-O Be6 9. f4 Rc8 10. f5 Bd7 11. g4 Ne5 12. g5 Ng8 13. Nd5 f6 14. Be3 b6
15. Nd4 Kf7 16. c3 Qe8 17. Ne6 Bxe6 18. fxe6+ Kf8 19. Nxf6 Nxf6 20. gxf6
Bxf6 21. Bh6+ Kg8 22. Rxf6 exf6 23. Qxd6 Rc6 24. Qxe5 fxe5 25. Rf1 Rc8 26.
Bd1 Rc4 27. Bb3 b5 28. Bxc4 bxc4 29. b3 cxb3 30. axb3 Qe7 31. Kg2 g5 32.
Rf2 a5 33. Rf5 Qd8 34. Rf1 a4 35. bxa4 Qa8 36. Kg3 Qd8 37. Kg2 Qd2+ 38. Rf2
Qxf2+ 39. Kxf2 g4 40. h3 g3+ 41. Kxg3 {Stalemate} 1-0

Which is not correct but anyway.
I think the queen sac is right but it is not easy to understand the complete analysis.

Kind regards
Bernhard

I think the queen sac is right but it is not easy to understand the complete analysis.

Your analysis is wrong because you allowed black Q to invade your 2nd rank
with a check. You notice on the previous page, I avoided this Q checks by
lifting the R beside the King. That's where you made mistake on your
analysis. Else this is completely winning and very easy to comprehend
because the black Q is nailed at f8 square. While your Q-side pawns would
position to seventh rank then deliver Rf8+ for the win.

You two are wasting time on the 28.Bxc4 line. 28.Bxc4 is an inaccuracy that unnecessarily complicates White's task. 28.a4 is the correct move.

28.a4 a6 - what else? The c4 rook cannot move as 29.e7+ decides instantly; the b5 pawn needs support, without that support after 29.axb5 the rook is hanging
29.axb5 axb5 - forced again for the same reason
30.Ba2 - making the way for the b-pawn

and Black has no satisfactory way to meet White's simple plan: b4 and Bxc4. Note that in this line Black is denied even the shade of counterplay present in the shape of his passed a-pawn in the line you are discussing. White has a passed pawn (the b4 pawn), Black has none. White promotes the b-pawn which Black is helpless to prevent (because of the ever-present threat of Rf8#), Black takes it and White plays his e-pawn to e7 with the same inevitable mate on f8 to follow shortly.

After the following moves

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be2 Nc6 7. Nb3 Bg7
8. O-O Be6 9. f4 Rc8 10. f5 Bd7 11. g4 Ne5 12. g5 Ng8 13. Nd5 f6 14. Be3 b6
15. Nd4 Kf7 16. c3 Qe8 17. Ne6 Bxe6 18. fxe6+ Kf8 19. Nxf6 Nxf6 20. gxf6
Bxf6 21. Bh6+ Kg8 22. Rxf6 exf6 23. Qxd6 Rc6 24. Qxe5 fxe5 25. Rf1 Rc8 26.
Bd1 b5 27. Bb3 Rc4 28. a4 a6 29. Rf2 Qe7 30. Kg2 Qe8

I get with some back and forth play

In this line White will not mate on g8 because Black returns the Queen on g7.
Now I am satisfied with this computer line.
White is winning.
Kind regards to you both.
