if you find interest and time i would be eagerly interested in what u and your system can find out...would be nice to see which moves might be as good as 46.Qb1 :-), Peer...but 46.Qb1 !? is loosing for black ;-)
According to my database, 46.Qb1 wins for Black as well as Qc1, Qd2, Qe2, Kb3 and Kb1, why shouldn't all of these, if one does so?
White's not in any hurry and not in Zugzwang, so first move doesn't matter so much as for the necessary maneuvers with King, Queen and Knight. There's more than one order and more then one direction the Knight can take attacking two of the three fields a5, c5, e5.

Tried new SF dev. by going into one of my stored winning lines, evals get >5 sooner then with Crystal, but yet at a short ponder- time started with empty hash of about 3 minutes, at position after 46.Qb6, SF dev. still sticks to 46...Nxb6? with an eval of >4, so the title of the thread is still true at least for the second part of it.
:)
And at Backward it's still difficult to keep the evals at root position >4, so Nxb6 is still a candidate as good as some others for the engine then again. Returning to root positions from winning lines means almost no special hash- entries to 46.Nxb6, so this one move is still to be pondered about almost as long as started with empty hash, that's the old problem of the nodes of not enough hash for all of the candidates to compare, even after Forward- Backward, always the latest lines gone backward are the most hash- filling ones.

I'd still rather take Crystal for this one position, evals don't get as high as quickly as with SF dev. by going into the winning lines, but they (the evals) are more reliable as for winning at all, cause the taking of the Queen at once is evaluated as drawn. If the fortress is searched out here, it probably will be later on too, if there still is one.
With some more hardware- time free, maybe I'll give it one more try later on to find out, how long which way to win takes regards...

Edit: see your latest posting now, probably meaning, you already gave up with SF dev. too again, nevermind, guess it can't work without fortress detection code of the kind of Crystal's.

Of course you're right about White win, just one more typo of mine.
The .pgn to this position is under recronstruction, too many, too long, too old and too little newly checked lines.
It will take some time, if I had found it (the time) to fully reanalyse the whole thing for my own content, I would already have posted it regards
Peter.

its really difficult for current-top-engines to recognize that Nx the Q is just a draw but its so extremely hard to see that avoiding the exchange is winning for white...and its not only a problem for engines but for humans as well !
i just try to make the "problem", or "study" more impressive:...this is the problem:
[d]2k5/2p5/1q1p4/pPpPp1pp/N1P1Pp2/P4PbP/KQ4P1/8 w - - 7 46
do NOT take the queen !!!....or u will not able to win (i dont mind if anyone cant achieve this)
[id rather see it as a study because the GM that played white didnt see it ]

peter wrote: Fri Jan 14, 2022 8:12 pm According to my database in the game A.B.Petrosjan-L.Hazay, Schilde 1970, at 46th move White has some ways of winning by force manoeuvring the Knight to b3 to threaten Black's a-pawn, the other one pawn at e5 is threatened in some lines too. Most important point is to keep Black from pushing a-pawn to a4, to deny that Black has to have triangles with Queen and King before removing Knight from a4 at a moment, when a-line isn't guarded by black Queeen. As soon as Black gets into zugzwang, such a position is to be reached and to come into that (zugzwang), its Bishop must not be able to shuffle to 1st rank anymore. Thus White has to keep g1- field guarded too with Queen or King.
In the original game win was missed by 46.Nxb6(?).
thank u Peter for this information..my impression is the same as yours but bridges might collapse after time...Eelco "gave" the suggestion to try the new SF.dev by Joerg Oster and after around 3-4h of forward/backward [ryzen 3600, 12 threads, no sysygys and ONLY 8 gb hash] im 99% sure that 46.Qb1 wins...here is the output after 46...h4:

i cant await wonders from "Osters"-SF...and i do not expect wonders from You...my amount of RAM is maybe too small to get a "root-investigation" of this position...BUT i will try it now again !
if you find interest and time i would be eagerly interested in what u and your system can find out...would be nice to see which moves might be as good as 46.Qb1 :-), Peer...but 46.Qb1 !? is loosing for black ;-)
Sorry, but I don't see it, you constructed PV is heavily influenced by remaining things in hash that are polluting the search. For example 48. .. Bh2 is probably a losing move with no justification.
I can challenge you to win the game if you like. I'll play black.

Checking all my old lines for an overall proof takes me too long, as for the question, if more then one first moves wins, I gave 46.Kb3 a try.
After some Backward of a winning line i get this output of Crystal's at the position after 46.Kb3:

That's without Syzygys and without NNUE, classical eval works better here regards

Pity still no solving of fail low from output above after 4 more hours, yet eval got even a little higher:

If next iteration or longer output- line won't arise sool, I'll have to stop that.

@ Milos: hop in, wherever you want, with deviation for Black in latest long output- line above and try to hold that against Crystal 4.0 with NNUE unchecked and Sygygys Probe Limit 0 (to have fastest search) at some good hardware-TC. Let the engine fill its hash before you do so with some Backward of the given line, till the evals start to climb.
If you manage to draw that, show your drawing- line please regards
Peter.
