SCID 5.0 release

Post by Fulvio »

What's new:
  • SCID5 Database Format
One of the most significant changes in this version is the introduction of a new database format, SCID5, that allows you to store up to 4 billion games. With this new format you can, for example, import and study the games of your friends from database.lichess.org and use that knowledge to easily beat them :-).
  • New Engine Window
The new engine window allows to easily add and configure chess engines, making it simple to test different engines. Utilize the full power of your CPUs and GPUs to get the most accurate analysis. With the new evaluation bar and the best move arrow you'll have all the tools you need.
  • Chess960 Support
This version also includes support for Chess960. Now, you can view and analyze games in this variant and use it to improve your chess skills. To search for Chess960 games, simply type "variant 960" in the Awesome Bar.
  • Dark Theme
The dark theme has been refined and it is now the default. It's easier on the eyes and perfect for late-night studying sessions.
  • Improved PGN support
It is now possible to directly modify games without having to convert the PGN files. Additionally, new line characters in comments are not removed or added, preserving the formatting chosen by the user.
Full packages with players' photo and sample databases:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scid/f ... cid%205.0/
or download just the binaries:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scid/f ... %20Latest/
It is also available on flathub:
https://flathub.org/apps/details/io.github.benini.scid

I'm also writing a new wiki, with some help from chatGPT:

Happy chess!

Happy chess!

Fulvio, fantastic information :)
Thank you very much for the latest version of Scid. This is one of my favorite chess programs!

I will definitely use it and who knows, maybe a review will come out of it.
All the best and good luck in developing this great program.
Regards, Darius

Thanks for the updated version of SCID!!

What is the utility used to convert a PGN file into a SCID database? And is that included in the SCID 5.0 download?

Thanks again for the new SCID!

A feature I use is to autoplay the games and in the end of the game the program automatically goes to the next game and starts autoplaying. Is that possible ?
I did noy find any menu with the "start autoplay" option. Tried <control>Z with no success.

( Good to review small databases of basic endings before a tournament, for example, but it can be used with tactics, etc.)

There is autoplay (right mouse-click on the "next" button under the board) but it will stop at the end of the game

Is there a way to disable the displaying of the arrow that SCID displays as the engine computes its move? It is annoying to see that arrow jumping around as the engine calculates.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Yes, it is possible:
- click on the evaluation bar
- deselect "Best move arrow"

I keep getting errors when Scid is doing analysis. Error: can not find channel: "stdout". What can be done here?
