The latest Windows update (4-7-2024) utterly fried my system.
Unable to boot.
Unable to restore to previous save point.
Unable to reinstall windows.
I had to download a new image to a USB thumb drive and wipe the old disk.
All my apps in the toilet.
All my chess applications gone.
My compilers, zoom, my bible study programs, my editors, everything.
Like flushing a toilet.
Why not pure linux now?
I recognize that there are so many Windows apps that I depend on right now.
I will slowly rebuild something I can use.
In the middle of the night some time on the 7th, my machine rebooted.
Today was the first day I could run anything.
Hope nobody else gets this same happy greeting.
I have a strange system, which cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 according to the MS analysis.
From 2019, AMD 3970x with 128GB RAM, and two 2080 Super GPUs, it is rejected for upgrade.
I need to find a way to Linux and hopefully with Wine I can run the windows stuff I need.
I hope I can recover my SQL Server instance. It has terabytes of chess data.
I do hope the same horrific terror does not befall even your worst enemy.
I have maybe 1% of the former functionality.

Speaking of Windows
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Re: Speaking of Windows
I keep rescheduling the current Windows 11 update as with every update, the keyboard on my 2023 Asus Duo....will not work. Basically you just 'uninstall the keyboard driver and reboot' and it comes back...but I'd rather do it on a weekend just in case.

Windows is like that, a real piece of CR@P from which it's preferable to stay as far away as possible! Unfortunately I need it too, because as you said, there are so many Windows native programs that make me stay with it.Dann Corbit wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2024 3:38 am The latest Windows update (4-7-2024) utterly fried my system.

But as long as you use Windows, make sure to always have an external hard drive, and continually to record everything there! Because with Windows it's like that, you will never know when it'll stop to work.

Re: Speaking of Windows
New horrors:
I keep finding out how badly other software is written.
I use Affinity to process photographs.
I tried to reinstall.
It asked for my credentials.
Of course, I do not remember the password and my password key locker file has been obliterated.
So It says to click a button to get a link.
The link says my link has expired. Click a button to get a link.
I guess you can see where this path is going.
I sent them a flaming email, more than they deserve, because I am sore at what happened to my machine.

Re: Speaking of Windows
Despite its faults, Windows is still best for my needs. Fortunately I've never had a catastrophe like that in the decades I've used it. I wouldn't call it crap, I'd say it is pretty decent.

Can you do a system restore to the day before it happened?Dann Corbit wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2024 4:34 am New horrors:

I had some system save points.
None of them worked.

I guess I will get back to what I need.
It spurs the urgency to get fully moved to Linux.
Which is probably a good thing.
