That is impressive! I felt no program could solve this in a reasonable amout of time.

It took nearly 12 minutes to see it was winning outright, nonetheless a very impressive result indeed!

A program like crafty will *never* find Bf6.
reason: this type of position is about zugzwang.
after Bf6 g6 Qh6 the black Ne6 has cannot move, he has to protect g7.
Crafty has no zugzwang detection.
Some progammers think speed is everything, so they will never do it right.

First i don't understand why zugzwang is a factor here.
I don't understand why black is in zugzwang.

I thought zugzwang situation is when one side to move will weaken its position after every move it will make and it would be better for that side not to move and pass.
But since in Chess one has to make a move and if making a move results in weakening its position, then this side is on zugzwang.

Black's problem here is not that he needs to pass or else it will weaken its position. Black's problem is just that it has a bad position and pass or no-pass does not matter.....

Perhaps i'm missing something here about zugzwang definition....

I'm surprised by this comment. I always thought about Crafty as an all-around program that knows all the tricks of Chess, and that it is just not the strongest around.
But different color-Bishop endings, wrong square in Bishop-Pawn endings, zugzwangs, mate with KB, etc things, i always found Crafty to know everything.
So Crafty does not support zugzwang and can't solve positions with zugzwang? Interesting....

I will try some positions to see.....
