Galurung shows +9.88 for drawn position

Post by Uri Blass »

Tablebases say draw but glaurung shows +9.88 score(I used 256 mbytes hash)

What is the reason for it?
Seeing score of more than +0.00 is logical because it is not a draw that is obvious by evaluation(I see no way to be sure that white cannot put black in zugzwang to force black to play g5 and win by hxg5) but I do not understand score of +9.88 assuming that the program has knowledge about blind bishop because the program should know that it is a draw immediatly after capture that leads to draw.

Re: Galurung shows +9.88 for drawn position

Post by Dann Corbit »

I guess that:
1. Glaurung is not compiled for the 6 man tablebase files.
2. You won't see the capture anywhere in any of the pvs.

That's because Glaurung will not make a move it knows will lose and so it is pushing it off to the horizon.

I guess that the best solution is to use a program which has 6 man tablebase files (or at least bitbase files) to analyze endgames with 6 chessmen left. In the real game, if played to the end, I am sure that the result will be a draw anyway (assuming ideal play by black). So the misevaluation will not do anything bad except maybe make the game play on a bit too long. And in the off-chance that black screws up, white may even gain 1/2 point by it.

That isn't the real issue. This is a simple B + wrong RP ending. The side with the bishop + rook pawns has no prayer of winning so long as he can't zugzwang black into giving up his g-pawn and let one of our h-pawns capture it. It isn't forced, and the right static evaluation here is 0.00. Probably this is just an ending Glaurung doesn't have special code for. Goodness knows there are enough special cases to keep anyone busy.

Crafty finds this as a draw instantly, without EGTBs because it knows about B + wrong RP endings.

I do not have the 6 piece tablebases and do not plan to download it
and it seems to be some bug in glaurung.

I think that 0.00 is wrong here without tablebases because you cannot know that white cannot win by zugzwang that force the black pawn to be captured by a pawn but +9 is also certainly wrong and it is logical to have an evaluation of +1.

Note that glaurung has initially 0.00 score and it seems that the search push glaurung to some position that it does not know to evaluate correctly.

Glaurung also has draw score instantly but later change it to non draw score.

I think that correct score should be slightly above 0 because you cannot know that it is impossible to capture the g pawn by zugzwang when the idea is that white force black to move and play hxg and win.

Here it does not work but there are cases when it works so a small positive score is probably better than a draw score.

Maybe 0.00 score when black has a single pawn is safe because even if the pawn is captured it is a stalemate(I am unsure about it) but when black has more than one pawn it is clearly not safe and here is an example

[d]7k/4K3/6p1/6p1/8/1B5P/8/8 w - - 0 1

Note that many programs have problem in this position

Here is analysis by yace with all the 5 piece tablebases
Yace can see the draw only at small depths or at big depths but it has +7.23 in the middle of the search

New game

Re: Galurung shows +9.88 for drawn position

Post by Uri Blass »

It is possible that the problem is with this type of position

Notice that the score of stalemate position after
9.Ke7-f7 g7-g5 10.h5xg6 is +9.35

It seems that glaurung has no function in the evaluation function that check if the position is a stalemate before evaluating it.

New game
[d]7k/4K1p1/8/7P/4B3/7P/8/8 w - - 0 1
