open apology to the chess engine community

Post by kranium »

this is an open apology to the chess engine community and to Olivier Deville

my addition of code from fruit/toga was a gross error in judgement on my part
i am deeply sorry, and i seriously regret my decisions and actions.

since the controversy unfolded, i have taken the following steps:

1. i have issued refunds
2. i immediately notified Olivier and withdrew from the tournament
3. i issued an apology to thomas/fabien
4. i changed the website
5. i have answered questions as honestly as i can

I am likely to release v 1.3 as open-source.

sincerely,
norman schmidt

Great job Norm, I think it does takes a real man to swallow his pride and admit his mistakes.

Thanks Norman. Hope you can make some improvments in
your program.

Good luck,

Gerold.

Norman,
your addition of code from fruit/toga would not be any error if you had contacted the author of Fruit. Only together with him you could have started a similar job.

Other solution would have been: working hard for a year or two on this program, turn it better than Rybka (or at least at the same level), and only then present it to our community. In this case, almost no one would consider you as a "cloner". You should know that there are "sins" that are "allowed" to the winners in our society.

Oh Lord, please don´t let me be misunderstood."

Thanks Norm

I am certain you are able to make a strong engine by yourself.

Releasing next Xyclops as open-source is appropriate. It would be great to remove all foreign code, so that the merits will be yours and yours only.

Good luck.

You got it cheap with a clever, fast confession. I hope you really feel sorry and NOT deviously exhilarated by the good tempered answers you got here.
