Windows 8.1 Pro does not by default have a sleep mode but I got it anyway and it was working fine until today when I noticed that when I closed the lid it was still in sleep mode but the minute I moved my mouse it kicked back in,hmm.
So I even unchecked in the mouse options under power management to NOT power it back on when I move the mouse. It was checked beforehand and it gave me no problems. I even have my LAN chip onboard disabled as I use WiFi in my room so that's never been a problem and I have not changed anything in BIOS.
Has anyone else had this annoying problem?

What exactly do you use sleep mode for? If you are not travelling do you really need it? Assuming you don't need to save the batteries when you have the computer at home, but maybe a too hot computer can be a nuisance too in a climate like Florida has in summer. Sleep mode was unusable in Windows XP, maybe it's better after some 10 years development but I don't trust it.

All manner of software and hardware can trigger Windows 8.1 to wake up from Sleep or Hibernate. Thus the first question to ask: 'Is this insomniac behavior due to Hardware or Software?'
Hardware
USB devices are common causes for computers waking prematurely. In the case of accidental mouse activation, consider laying the mouse on its back until you find a better solution.[/quote]
Maybe you could consider making a little network and place that laptop in another room where the heat is not such a bother, but you can still access it remotely?

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

I use sleep mode when I go out for my morning ride. Sleep mode has worked flawlessly for me in Windows 8.0 & 8.1 Pro until now. Most of the house is A/C when it's on. I have a big ceiling fan over me and I am out in the patio which does not get A/C. I do have a cooling pad which I only put on when I use my chess engines as they heat up the CPU rather quickly.
The heats does not bother me. I bicycle 6X's a week and I walk that much too on top of it. I am originally from RI and they do have hot weather just like FL so I used to it except the heat spell does not last all year as it does down here.

Thanks Bob, I can feel the love all the way down here.

Re: Problems with sleep mode in laptop
Seems like I just fixed it. I made a few changes in BIOS in the Power Management section and I tried it and when I tell my laptop to go to bed it does so the only way for it to wake back up is when I life the screen back up.

I fixed it myself, thanks. Error reporting, find the driver online for you, trouble shooting. I have found over the years that most of these supposedly helpful tools that are built into Windows are as useful as tits on a bull.Cumnor wrote:Try this link next time the fix worked for my laptop http://www.thewindowsclub.com/sleep-mod ... indows-8-1
