Center

Are two pawns on the fourth row in the center stronger than three pawns ?
Or is one pawn or perhaps four or five pawns best.

Depends on the position. But for an engine, if you will try to have an evaluation parameter related to this, I suggest to do some tests with different combinations. Anyway you can win very little from this, so I suggest to improve the engine with other more important parameters if is the case and you whish.

Not so sure about that. In Aljechin opening four pawns attack is not that bad for black. In Pirc defense you have Austrian attack.

Kings Indian has four pawns attack.

Steinitz advocated a strong two pawn center.

Perhaps if someone has values for these formations in their pawn table.

A beginners rule says you should have at least one pawn in center.

[I forget Kings gambit declined also has three pawns in center. And Nf7: in Petroff defense may give large center formations for white]

But what was his result? The student with the most points was:

[A] just stupid
annoying
[C] boring
[d] funny (but only in the students' imagination)

Don't know. I only saw the documentary a few weeks ago.

When he was much older he was invited for an interview on TV for a large amount of money but he was not willing to answer any questions at all. He only wanted a monoloog. Which was an unpleasant surprise for the interviewer.
