Round 9
A80 - Dutch 2.Bg5
Komodo scratches a sixteen-games old itch!
Game 17 saw White emerge from the book with a healthy positional plus. 2...Nf6 is a dubious line that gives Black a dreary position to defend, with White having all the fun at the symbolic cost of the bishop pair. By move 15 the position resembled a King's Gambiteer's dream - an ideal pawn center, with Black's kingside and queenside pawns in disarray - except that White didn't have to give up the f-pawn to achieve it! At this point SF lashed out with 15...g4 and it took it an additional five moves to realize that things were bad indeed. In short, Komodo confidently nursed its positional advantage to a win.
In game 18 Komodo demonstrated how such inferior opening positions should be defended. The game went the whole length and is scheduled for a playoff. Despite both engines reporting a +/- a draw is the most likely outcome.
Score: 6.5-8.5 (+1-3=11 ?3)

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game
Round 10
A01 - Nimzovitch-Larsen Opening with 1...d5
(for some strange reason Chessbase classifies it as an A06 Reti, though)
Game 19 is another heavyweight positional battle. White meticulously prepares to open the kingside, ignores Black's pawn offer and after 39.Ne5 appears to have a dangerous attack. His weak f-pawn and the awkward placement of the king and the king's bishop allow Black to keep things from getting out of hand, though.
Game 20 is more like a Reti. Drawfish apparently doesn't not find such positions too inspiring and opts to give up a pawn to force a perpetual and call it a day early.
Score: 7.5-9.5 (=1-3=13 ?3)

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game
Round 11
A00 - Sokolsky/Orangutang
Symbolic White advantage out of the book. In game 21 Komodo managed to create some play on the queenside and on move 23 win the a-pawn. Stockfish response was a kingside pawn storm. In the final position K planned 32.Ng3 Nf5 33.Nf1, inviting a threefold repetition. Avoiding the repetition invited SF to test mating ideas like ...Nf3+.
In game 22 White chose to forestall Black's kingside attack, give up his own a-pawn temporarily to stir up some complications and this time wound up with a an extra passed c-pawn. Completely different play yet the end result was curiously the same: a looming threefolder.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game
Round 12
A00 - Andersen Opening (1.a3)
transposing into the London System vs. ...d5
Seriously, GMs play this? Don't see how a3 helps the already-stolid London. Apparently Komodo doesn't either, as game 23 was another GM draw. White was more enterprising in game 24, going for IQP and some active knights. This, too, would have been an early draw had SF not been seeing a microscopic white advantage every now and then. Komodo ended up winning a pawn and then sacrificed the queen (!) for a rook, knight and a pawn, whereupon the draw followed shortly.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game
Round 13
A01 - Nimzowitsch-Larsen Opening vs. ...g6
A sharp opening line with an early development of the white queen. In game 25 Komodo sacrificed a pawn to break up the black kingside, SF countered with forcing a queens exchange. The final position still looked sharp, no doubt humans would have played on much longer. Game 26 took a similar course, with White giving up a pawn in exchange for a strong knight on e4 and some threats against the black king. Black kept the balance with a temporary pawn counter-sacrifice to expose the white king and guarantee counterplay. In both games it would be interesting to see how the engines would continue with some contempt on.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game
Round 14
A15 - English, Double Fianchetto vs. the King's Indian
Two fun, full-length battles at last! In game 27 SF gave up a whole rook for a bunch of checks that would have led to a forced exchange of queens and three isolated passed pawns for White's extra exchange, had the game continued. Game 28 was even more lively, with lots of active piece play on both sides. At one point White was three pawns up and gave up a piece to have two sets of connected passed pawns vs. opponent's none. Hard to believe Black can hold the final position but both silicone monsters thought it could.

Score: 11.5-13.5 (+1-3=21 ?3)

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game
Round 15
B06 - Modern Defence
A dubious opening line, from the engines' point of view, with early queenside activity by Black that both competitors prove to be premature and score a point each. SF goes about it quicker in game 30, no doubt helped again by a large disparity in eval between the engines. See move 25, for example: Komodo thinks the position is nigh equal while Stockfish scores it as winning for White - and at a lower depth, too. Clearly something Komodo's developers need to have a close look at.

Score: 12.5-14.5 (+2-4=21 ?3)

Not a serious opening, you might think. See game 4 then - SF steadily builds pressure on the queenside, posts a rook on c5 (move 56) - presumably targeting the weak a5 pawn - and suddenly sacrifices a piece on the kingside on the next move. A king hunt ensues that features another sacrifice (this time of the exchange), and it's not until nine moves (!) later that Komodo realizes that it's completely lost (see the eval swing from 0.32 to 3.77 between moves 66 and 67).
Alekhine-like play.
thanks for posting this. Maybe I'm blind but I can't figure out how to find this game 4 and the other even number games, where Stokfish plays white. Can you please hint me here?
