Two Knights Leela Odds Challenge

Post by lkaufman »

With the Queen for Knight Leela challenge on LiChess won (by GM Jeffery Xiong), we moved on tonite to the similar challenge at odds of two (White) knights (using the LeelaPieceOdds bot). Time limit is set to 3'0", to be increased to 3'1" only if no one can win at 3'0" after several tries by players over 2800 Lichess. Open to FMs and above rated over 2500 LiChess blitz plus selected other high-rated masters. First player to compile an overall plus score from the start of the challenge, including at least ten wins, wins the $300 prize (unless evidence of cheating). First challenger was "Chess-Network", a popular streamer of around IM strength at least in blitz and Rapid. He won 3, drew 3, and lost 23. So it looks like it will take a strong GM or a very top IM to take the prize at the current time control. IM Kacper Drozdowski, rated 2900+ on Lichess blitz, is the only person on record with a meaningful even or better record in blitz at these odds, so he might be successful, or perhaps Jeffery Xiong again, or someone new to this. GM Jeffery Xiong, rated over 2700 FIDE blitz, took up the Two Knights challenge this morning, losing by 12 to 8 with 7 draws. He can play more games later if he wishes but needs an overall plus score including these games.

After several strong players tried the challenge and failed, including Chess-Network, GM Jeffery Xiong, IM Kacper Drozdowski and GM Keith Arkell (by 23 to 2!), young GM Andy Woodward won quite easily with 8 wins, 5 draws, and 2 losses. Considering how strong Jeffery and Kacper are in blitz, this was quite a remarkable achievement. I don't know if anyone in the world could do better.
