New Shredder 14 Released...

My initial tests have Shredder 14 well below Stockfish in terms of strength. More than 200 ELO below. I'm a little surprised. I thought with a decent code base, moving to NNUE and AI, it would be possible to get within 100 ELO of Stockfish.

Selling a program that can only use a single CPU core for €50 has to be some kind of April Fools’ joke. It’s basically a program made for a handful of collectors.

If you are a collector, you don't purchase it for €50. S13 owners get a 20% reduction and that's €40.

I bought deep shredder13 in 2016 and got also 20% discount and bought deep shredder14 today of course.

i know stefan from many real life tournaments and i wish him all the best.

In one championship, was it in paderborn university, he fought bruce morelands ferret until final rounds and playoff where he won the title.

At the 9th World Computer Chess Championship, Paderborn 1999, Ferret was unlucky in not winning a dramatical playoff against Shredder.

sorry for the low quality at this time but we had only VHS and video camcorders, and flatscreens were not there, we had mainly CRT monitor in 1999.

i think at that time famous Ossi Weiner sold Shredder Chess, thats why Ossi sits next to Stefan Meyer Kahlen.

today in 2026, shredder is in version 14 (after a small 10 years holiday between 2016 and 2026)

Chessbase also tried to win but chessbase never had any chance no matter which hardware they used.
we made sure chessbase will not win.


Why Paderborn ??

in Paderborn there was a nice university.
the river PADER has its source in paderborn (as the name itself suggests).

There is the Siemens / Nixdorf museum (next to the university of Paderborn)
because german computers all began with Konrad Zuse (born 1910) in germany.
and in the museum in paderborn you can see how konrad zuse and his z3 machine that was used 1941
in berlin worked.

So when Stefan Meyer Kahlen won the title in 1999 in Paderborn he
brought back the computerchess title to germany into the museum that hosts Konrad Zuses z3.

I've always liked the playing style of Shredder when it was winning titles a long time ago. I still enjoy watching e.g. Shredder 8 play against opponents close to its own strength.
I wonder how much of this style has been lost in order to play within 100 elo or so of Stockfish. I'm assuming it would now need to resemble Stockfish more in terms of move choices in order to play much stronger than earlier Shredder versions, which is understandable but I'm being more nostalgic rather than looking for another strong Stockfish-like engine. I'd like to be wrong and find a good reason to buy it

I have measured Shredder 14's strength at 3585 +/- 11 Elo after 5,000 2+1 bullet games.

I never thought it would come out finally.

but surprise surprise. 10 years later....

now i can say: i was there when shredder14 came out.

That gave me a good chuckle . Admit I'm really happy about it too. Bought the past couple Deep versions (Windows and Linux). Have a sweet spot for the engine and it's history. Miss the old days of people actually flying across the pond to meet up in person for OTB (C) tourneys. Wish that still existed but with costs and ease of lichess, I understand.

Thank you so much for posting these. That was around the time I was first getting deep into computer chess (no pun intended) and as a college kid I dreamed of going to competitions. Paderborn was amazing to read about at the time. It's wonderful to actually see video from it. True gem.
