SCID works well: http://prolinux.free.fr/scid/
That in conjunction with wine allows engines compiled for Windows to work at native speed running under Linux/SCID.
I also use Chessbase (Shredder 8 GUI for me) under wine and it runs flawlessly.

Re: Free chess GUI's for Linux
Jose supports both UCI and Winboard (protocol 1):
http://jose-chess.sourceforge.net/
Arena also seems to work under wine, but then you can only use Windows executables of the chess engines.
I use Xboard with Polyglot. It allows me to use pretty much every chess engine there is, Windows (again under wine) or Linux.

Of course Chessbase GUIs are not free in general, though isn't there a couple that are now free -- ones that are pretty old? I bought Shredder8 long ago so it seems free to me as the $ was spent long ago.
I was waiting for someone to catch that one.
