Grand Blitz Tournament - 2: Suggestions?

Post by swami »

Finally, I'm back to testing again! Are you happy?

Anyway, I'm planning to organize GBT-2 for engines rated 2300 and below. I had run the tournament for the engines rated more than 2300. So I think I needed another tournament that just about covers tons of engines, to close the 2000 gap barrier.

Reason I'm doing this is, I plan to do more quick gauntlet style tourneys in the future. I think I will publish the results of all the _updated_ engines that were released earlier the following day, using GBT as the default starting point.

NOTE:

- Please do recommend me any engines that should be in this list. I'd greatly appreciate your suggestion.

- This tournament is only open to the engines rated around 2300 and below. There are about 119 engines currently in this list, I will finalize the list and post the complete participant list in the next few days. I've heard that a lot of engines in this particular rating range have numerous bugs, I have to exclude engines that have serious bugs in general. Therefore, I need your help in finding out those engines.

- This list below is not the final one.

- I have to install all these engines and see if there's any bug.

- I will run the tournament once I have done setting up all these engines.

- Other Engine authors who do not see their engine in this list (private engine or otherwise) and wanted to see their engine play in this league (Rating =<2300), please reply to this message or pm me.

- Tournament Conditions:
Core 2 Quad Q 6600, 2.4 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, 32 bits
TC: Blitz 1/1
GUI: Arena 1.99 beta 5.
Opening Books: Yet to be decided.

Definitely yes.

Is there a prediction tourney too?

Best,

PS: I'll also start with new engines, possibly in next month.

Thanks, definitely there will be a prediction tourney as well, I don't think it would be as popular as the last one though (GBT July >2300), since this has engines <2300 and mostly untested by a lot of participants, but still I hope there will be significant number of participants.

I have this suggestion, get 128 engines participating and run 2 tournaments.

The first one just like you have planned and the second one a single elimination tourney in where in the first round you eliminate 64 engines, on the second 32 engines, on the third 16 engines, then 8, 4 and 2, and there's a final round between these 2 remaining engines.

I think it'd be very fun and interesting to know if the winner of the first tourney is the same as the second.

Just, an idea ;)

I like the idea, but Arena doesn't support knock out mode.

I guess I have to do all those wb2uci stuff and get them installed in chessbase, which is bit tedious unless I have a motivation to do it, besides I'd bet that atleast 10 engines would work well in Arena but can't function in chessbase due to some unknown bug with adapter or something.

But I will try installing all of them to see if it's Ok. Also, what'd be the number of rounds in KO? Should engines play 10 games minimum?

Thanks for that idea, though. Are there more?

7 rounds, the 2 top engines play 7 rounds, the engines that lose in the first round only play 1 round, etc.

You can use the results of the first tourney to decide the pairing of the engines for the second tourney, so the first place doesn't face the second place on the first round.

Of course you can play 4 rounds and make the 8 remaining engines play a round robin.

It could prove to be a big hassle, though. Sorry, no more ideas, this is as fun as it gets with engines <2300 ;)

I've had problems with Mustang, Wing, BlackBishop, Matant and Butcher, but only where using a second time control.

Strangely, I don't find any problems with these engines, so perhaps they don't have a bug in blitz or something. Thanks for letting me know about it though. I will recheck them before adding them to the tournament, I don't want to see a major bug in this tournament. :)

Yes, Sounds like a good idea, I will organise the KO soon after this tournament is finished, so I could know the engine seedings.
