My old Q6600 has died....
I was looking for a new computer, and curious which processor you guys would recommend. I am looking at spending $600-$800, so nothing too high end.
I read a few other treads, but most where 5 months or older.
Thank you

Re: New computer
I have never had a CPU fail on me yet, are you sure it is a problem with the CPU? If so then why not simply change the CPU? Or if it is not the CPU, maybe the problem is the motherboard, and again that is a simple replaceable item. Another thing that could have gone bad is the Power Supply or the hard disk ... also easily replaceable. That would be a lot cheaper than buying a completely new system. Even if say your CPU and motherboard are both dead, you can replace only these 2 items and keep the rest of your other components.
If you just want to upgrade to a faster system, then I guess the new i5 or i7 Sandy Bridge 32nm CPU's are the equivalent of the Q6600 of the time (in terms of overclocking).

Re: New computer
Thanks for the reply, you are right it might be the cpu, gpu, HD, or power source.
I am not that tech savy, so I am not sure I could replace it.
Just for fun....
When I press the power button the computer does not turn on.
1. Yes its plugged in
2. Yes the outlet has power.
3. Yes the light in the back goes on so I know tis getting power.
When I took off the case the fan tries to go but sputters and dies.

Re: New computer
Sounds like a power supply issue. Not a CPU or motherboard issue.
Easy enough fix to tell you the truth. Even the most non-tech savy people can replace a power supply.

I was kicked out of Chapters because I moved all the Bibles to the fiction section.

Re: New computer
If you do need to replace more than the power supply, and can't easily swap the motherboard and other components, then there are some deals on eBay, especially if you are willing to look at used or refurbished gear. (You won't find the Ivy Bridge systems, which are just released, in this category, but you can find Sandy Bridge systems using i5-2300, i5-2400, or i5-2500 CPUs).

No, you won't. However, if you change your mind and want to buy new, I would recommend Ivy Bridge and next, Sandy Bridge. Sandy Bridge has been on the market for almost a year and a half. I'm sure you could get a good deal in a used or refurbished.jdart wrote:I meant, you probably won't find it used or refurbished.Terry McCracken wrote:
