Regardless whether the idea is how to find the best number for this parameter is appropriate or not, the way of thinking outside the box caught my attention. Here, we were seeing probably the beginning of Doch/Komodo by 2008. There is another post in the early 2000 in which he explained his philosophy on forward pruning that was a gem. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find it, for a long time.

Don's posts were always worth saving. His explanations were lucid and cut straight to the heart of the matter. I wasn't surprised at all that he eventually created one of the strongest chess engines ever. What did surprise me is that he was so willing to share his ideas with the rest of us. In an age where most commercial chess programmer's share next to nothing, Don's generosity was a refreshing exception. It said so much about his character and integrity. He will be sorely missed.
