Help required to choose Hiarcs

Post by Jaimes Conda »

The quote below is taken from the Hiarcs web site.

Quote :- ‘’A Variety of opponents and chess strengths: You need an opponent who can give you a realistic challenge but also be beatable. However, you also need an opponent who will grow with your needs to help you make progress and remain interested not bored. All HIARCS chess programs offer a huge range of playing opponents and levels. In fact HIARCS chess software caters for all levels from beginner through to Super Grandmaster with graduated playing levels allowing for steady progression as you improve. Not only that, unlike other chess programs HIARCS will make human-like mistakes on these handicapped levels so you really experience what it is like to play a human player at the level you have chosen.’’ End Quote.

Hiarcs would seem to be a good computer opponent and is available on disc and now Hiarcs 11 as a UCI download engine.
I want to have a selection of varying strength opponents and be able to play connected to a DGT board.

1. Is Hiarcs on disc compatible with the DGT board?

2. How would the Hiarcs uci engine different levels be accessed when downloaded into Fritz 9 gui? ( F9 is compatible with the DGT board)

Thanks for any replies. Jaimes

Are you talking about the Hiarcs 10 CB? It uses the Fritz GUI so it should be compatible. If you meant H11, it depends on what interface you're using.

The same way all other engines do. Via the engine parameters. UCI_LimitStrength and UCI Elo in this case (most UCI engines that can limit their strength use them). More information

sorry for reviving an old thread but according to Hiarcs page:

Sharpen PV (OFF)

This setting tells HIARCS to investigate the principle variation in a more active way. The default is OFF. However, for detailed analysis and games at 1 minute per move and longer we recommend this setting is switched ON.

Doesn't it sound like it would make more sense for the default to be ON? Most games are longer than bullet games..

Doesn't make much difference at all in terms of strength - probably 5-10 ELO.

Cheers,
Graham.

1 minute per move is hardly bullet.
