Challenge to Collectors: Steve, Fernando ....

Post by CRoberson »

Hi Guys,

As you know, I have an affinity for the computer chess boards.
There are many reasons that I like them, but one stands out.
They are the only source for a static opponent. Software is
not static - new versions, different hardware, different books...

So, I'd like to pit Telepath against an opponent with an established
rating.

I propose a forum match. One of you will challenge Telepath with
a board that is rated around 2200 FIDE. I will run Telepath on 1 proc
of a Q6600. The match could take place on ICC or playchess, but
I'd like it to happen here in the forum. We can dual post to other
forums. I think the timer issues can be resolved. I think the other
members of the forum(s) might find it entertaining.

What do you say guys?
Tony Thomas

Dont you think 2200 is little too weak for telepath? Telepath is as strong as Romichess and has equal score against Romi on ICC, or so I think (note that Telepath does run on a faster computer, and has a really great opening book for an amateur engine). I did not count the loses by Telepath due to crashes...

I am referring to a FIDE estimate of 2200. I don't know the proper
equation to convert ICC to FIDE. I understand FIDE + 150 = USCF.
This means I am requesting something around 2350 USCF.

The top rated boards are 2352 ELO (FIDE estimate).

Also, the latest Telepath version is about 100 pts or more stronger
than the one Romi played before. In fact, several of the bug fixes
were tested against positions from those games. I think this Telepath
is better than Romi now. Be nice to try an ICC match up.

I currently estimate Telpath around 2510 CCRL (the 64 bit version).
Anybody know how to convert (guess) CCRL to FIDE?

Also, I've created a new book. Its shallower but broader and
auto-tuned. I hope that will make it perform better, but that remains to
be seen.

I would love to do it, BUT I have not a dedicated unit that strong and I have no time to do it. I am sure, though, Steve can fulfill both conditions.

2200 could be e.g. the SPARC module of the Spracklens.

http://www.schach-computer.info/wiki/in ... itek_Sparc

its RISC 32 Bit and has Hash-Tables.

more information in english here :

as an alternative, a RISC I with Ed Schroeders program could be an opponent, or the TASC R30 with Johan de Konings marvellous The King program...

But i don't have those machines...
i do only have the SPARC.

i always hoped mark uniacke comes out with a sparc version of his hiarcs world computer chess champion program from 1993. there in munich he participated on a sparc workstation, and it would have been easy IMO to
transfer hiarcs from workstation Sparc into dedicated computer with sparc hardware.
but this has never realized....

Hi Charles
actually i did not realize you had an interest in the old dedicated computers
i do remember you asking me to compete in one of your first Tournaments with a dedicated but i dont remember the details
anyway ..i would be very interested in a match..the moves of which would be played here and posted here
i guess in the tournament section
we can keep a running Fen going as well
on Hiarcs i was able to edit the Fen diagram because i was a moderator there..here we will not be able to edit it but i guess we can just keep re-posting the Fen after each move

what time frame to you propose?
we can see from games like this on other forums a long time frame of 48 hours per move simply leads to a never ending string of draws.. no matter the hardware used..opening employed or engines used

i would suggest we let our engines run for one hour on each move then turn them off..reply moves must be posted within 24 hours or notice given if either will not be able to post a move within 24
as to my computer.....
here is a list of computers rated 2200 ELO or better
choose which ever engine you like for me to play or perhaps other members can choose which one they would like me to use
they seem to know better the opponent i will be facing:
http://www.schachcomputer.at/eloliste.htm

if you would rather just play a match at very short time controls on Play chess then we can do that as well but i would prefer the longer one played here

your call and thanks very much for issuing this challenge

so if no one else will accept ....
Challenge Accepted Regards

also

i could use the Revelation which is a dedicated computer that has 8 on board engines
depending on the engine loaded it is rated an estimated 2600 ELO ish
it runs on a 500 Mhz processor

each engine has its own book except for Deep Sjeng 3.0 which must use the Noomen Rybka book

more here:
http://www.phoenixcs.nl/index.php?optio ... &Itemid=46

this would be bit like having a match between to PC engines which i think it not the point of your challenge.. and i agree ..so personally i would prefer not to use the Rev however.. again..

Your Call Regards

I dont think there is a way to convert ICC ratings in to actual ratings. ICC rating of Romi is currently inflated as I tend to play games against engines and people that I think Romi can win against.. Look at my history, I have played almost 50 games against Strongbach to boost up the bullet rating.. I do not know many engines that actually plays bullet on ICC and also due to Romi's time management issues Romi even fumbles against strongbach occasionally. I have heard that Mike fixed the ponder related time management issues, but I havent talked to him in a while since my computer is in no shape to do serious testing.

If it serves you as consolation, I already have lost around 50k bucks. I just took the rest of my money and put it elsewhere, but the lose is there.
I hate the capitalism system these days...
BTW...
Are we going to sell our collections to get a hot soup?
