Yes, it's a good solution. Unfortunately it is not supported in gauntlet tournaments in GUIs I am using.kranium wrote:thanks Kirill for your detailed response,
what you say makes sense.
I guess Grant's suggestion is the solution really:
As far as you know, can this be done with most (or any) GUIs or tournament managers?Graham Banks wrote:Ideally when using a common opening book, it is best to let each engine play from the particular opening position that arises as both White and Black.

Re: Engine testing with opening books - why?
Probably true in general, but unlike most, my engine has a native GUI and installer. It's been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times. I am sure 99% of users of the program download it, install it, run it, and don't ever change any of the options. They haven't even heard of Winboard.I think that out of all people using chess engines, most are doing analysis rather than playing with them.
Of course the same is true for many commercial programs, especially the more widely distributed ones such as Chessmaster.

I myself play the chess engines as I include myself in my own tournaments and in the rating list of course,so,I will meet Arasan soon
BTW,your GUI is great,I only miss a tournament mode to match the chess engines and I'll never use another GUI....so,is that possible

However, IIRC Arasan has a seperate engine for Winboard. That implies to me that the Arasan GUI and GUI-engine are not winboard compatible. The GUI then probably has very little in common with Winboard and most likely does not use pipes or even a protocol to communicate with GUI-Arasan. Jon would have to completely rewrite the GUI keeping only the graphics and some minor support functions. But, if Jon could pull it off then that would be a big step forward for Arasan!

Re: Engine testing with opening books - why?
Actually the Arasan native UI-> engine communication does use the Winboard protocol, with a few "private" commands for functions Winboard doesn't support. (It didn't always work this way but the past several years that's how it works).
But it hasn't been a priority for me to add engine match support or chess server support. There are lots of interfaces that do that.
