I am looking for volunteers to help me with this project. Reply here
if interested and collectors spread the word.
I've decided that I want to know the rating of my dedicated units
on the Easy and Beginner levels:
1 ply + 2 ply capture search ..... 2 ply + 9 ply capture search.
I believe that each unit from a given vendor is likely to have the
same rating for one of the mentioned levels. Ex: Novag Saphire II
at 1 ply + 2 ply capture = Citrine at 1 ply + 2ply capture. The main
issue with that may be opening books.
I've devised a plan to use computers and engines from the WBEC
rating list to rate these levels. Assuming that a given level from
a given vendor is the same across the machines, we could do this
quickly with help and all the people need is a machine with that
crippled level.
The plan is to rate all the levels mentioned above. Should be quick
and easy with enough help. If a machine is significantly different
from the rest, the testing process will show it. I have the plan
worked out. I will publish it when I get volunteers.
All data and results will be published on the web and all volunteers
will be listed.
So, who is game?

not sure if all of the computers you will test have those special Ply capture leves though
generally only Novag has those levels
what computers will you be testing??

Thanks for volunteering. The idea is to test/rate any machine with
those levels. I know the Excalbur Karpov has those levels and I think
the some of the Fidelity machines have them. We would start with
1 ply + 2 caps, 1 ply + 5 caps and 1 ply + 9 caps. If there isn't
a significant rating difference in those levels then we can skip the
other 1 ply levels and move on the the 2 ply levels in the same
way.
Also, I'd like to rate some of the ply levels: Fixed Depth 1 - 6 or 7.
The reason to start with the ones mentioned is that they move
very quickly. This is why I shy away from ply 11 or even ply 9
which are listed as analysis levels on the Citrine - they would take
too long. We may be able to get rating estimates for those deep
plies mathematically. After testing plies 1 - 8, we may see a easily
predictable curve/line. We could extend the curve for rating
estimates beyond our testing levels.
Another amenity to the fixed ply levels with full capture search is
that we may be able to see how much the other programming (position eval)
makes a difference. If it doesn't then all dedicated units will have
the same ratings at given fixed search depths.
I am sure the position eval will make a difference. Some of the
machines from the 1980's and earlier didn't have much if any
pawn structure eval and that should make a difference.
People can volunteer with what ever equipment they have.

The Karpov is really the Novag Emerald Classic Plus ..so thats why you see levels like thatCRoberson wrote:

well ..i will need to check a large amount of computer manuals to see which computers have those levels
here is the manual for a late model Fidelity
turn to page 16(of the manual)
which one of those levels (if any)would you need tested?

what will the testing consist of?

So, lets start with the Citrine and the Sapphire II.
Take your pick on which one you test.
The idea is to download and install 3 programs rated by Leo on WBEC.
I've picked 3 programs that are likely to be in the range of the
Easy and Beginner levels. The programs are Xadreco 5.6,
Geko 0.4.3 and Youk 1.05. Their ratings are 853, 937 and
1107 respectively.
Install them in Arena or something and set the time control based
on the speed of your machine relative to Leo's machine. I used
Telepath to benchmark some machines given I have some Telepath
benchmarks from your machine. Leo performs tests at 40 moves
in 40 minutes. The adjustment for your machine would be 40 moves
in 25 minutes and set ponder on for the PC programs.
I can send you the engines if needed.
We can start with the simple assumption test. That the Citrine and
the Sapphire II will perform at the same level with the same
settings that we discussed. So, we both can run 2 games per program
thus 6 games for you and another 6 for me. Run your machine
against each of the 3 programs twice and swap colors. Use the
level 1 ply + 2 caps (EA 1).
If your 6 and mine show similar results then we can split the other
levels. I can do 2 + 9 caps and you can do 1 + 9 caps. I'll handle
2 + 2 caps.
That will take care of the first set of experiments. Also, the 1 + 9 caps
and the 2 + 9 caps should be equivalent to the fixed depth 1 ply
and fixed depth 2 ply respectively. This will leave us with only
4 levels to test: fd 3, 4, 5, 6.
After that, we can talk about 7 or 8 if we feel ambitious or we
get help from other volunteers.

you want 6 games(colors reversed) with the engines playing 40/25min..pondering on
the dedicated's play at the level EA1
send the three engines..
i play sometimes in Playchess ..can i use their interface to run the three engines?
i assume the engines can be set to the 40/25 TC by the GUI?
this will have to be a weekend warrior (Sunday)project from my end as during this time of year i am smokin' tax returns 6 days a week
ill use the Sap II
Tax Season Regards

Game 1:
This is rather interesting. WBEC list rates Marquis at 1235 but
the Citrine at Level EA 1 (1 ply + 2 captures) holds its own until
it can't see a couple of tactical errors. One neat observation is at
one point the Citrine didn't fall for Be3 x Rc5. My son first thought
it would then I informed him that it hangs a free queen. Of course,
a 1 ply search with 0 captures following would not have caught that.

Re: Dedicated Machine: Easy/Beginner Level rating project
Game 2:
Marquis wins again. Basically the programs hold even until the
game opens up and then Marquis greater search depth prevails.
There is an entertaining queen jaunt here. For a while, it looked
as if the white queen would get trapped, but no - the run ends in
white winning the exchange.
I wasn't going to test against Marquis, because I thought that
level EA 1 (1 ply + 2 captures) was too weak for a 1235 WBEC
program. My son forced me into it since he likes to play both
Marquis and the Citrine on EA 1.
At this point, I expect EA 1 will score in the 800's as I previously
expected. My initial expectations come from a 1991 paper that
claims that programs searching 4 ply can rate 1400 and each
ply is worth 200. Thus, 1 ply = 800. Each ply isn't worth 200 today
at the top levels due to modern search techniques. I think all
the dedicated units still have their programming from the 1990's,
thus I expect the results to be inline with the mentioned paper.

Re: Dedicated Machine: Easy/Beginner Level rating project
Game 4:
Again we see a lose by Citrine EA 1 at the hands of Xadreco 5.6
(WBEC 853). The Citrine was up 2 minor pieces at one point, but
it traps its h8 Rook on home base. Then it over looks a mate in
2 which it obviously would given the level of 1 ply search and 2
captures.
Current estimate is that Citrine at level EA 1 is between 400 and
800.
