Fritz 1 has never crashed for me.Joerg Oster wrote:Fritz 1 of course...

You can run it in Vista x64 in DosBox....but it does require alot of fiddling.....

Easier to do is in a virtual machine of a supported OS......

Hi,
Fritz 5 is really bad. Crashes all the time. Had crashes with 6 & 8 too. Let's hope 12 is better and solves all other issues too. But they knew about some of those from version 6 or 7 on and nothing happened.
Why don't they just post the known bugs on their page so you don't need to report them over and over again.
Most serious pages had or have such a section on their page or at lesat mention known problems.

You knows what's funny? This poll is a reaction to Harvey's biased poll.Michael Diosi wrote:Hi,

However after this one has run a little i'm going to make another one.
In that one I'm going to ask which Fritz GUI people thought was the most reliable.
Note...this is not about the engine......this is only about the GUI.
In this poll I voted for 8 which was at times unusable. In the following poll the only hint I can give is that it is an earlier version.
If no one here bought Fritz but instead bought Hiarcs, ZapChess, ChessTiger or Shredder, they should be able to work out which version that pertains to.

Christopher
PS Polls are good. Harvey likes them as well it seems.......

Some people might like to know how to get older programs to play on new hardware and software. Playing and using older programs is something that is very rewarding......
The best combination that I ever had from ChessBase was these two working together......

And I really am being serious.

It seems we have a hot spot developing between 4 and 8. Interestingly there are no votes for 9 yet even though that one had "The Turk" which was as slow as a week in the jail and "crash city" rolled into one.
Let's leave it a little longer, then we will make the other poll (just to be fair).

The crash leader so far is.......

It's quite pretty, isn't it.

Re: Which Fritz GUI crashes the most in your experience?
This is difficult to answer, as most Windows versions were supported with several bugfixes, each. E.g. if the initial version would sometimes crash under certain conditions, I assume that some of crashes were fixed, later.
My version of F11 which was distributed with S11 SE, sometimes crashes when I try to load an UCI engine. It could be related to tablebase access during initialisation, but I'm not sure.
The DOS Fritzes were very stable, like most commercial DOS chess programs I have used. But these progs often required "advanced configuration skills" to optimize the memory configurations, both of system and the program itself. Maybe they have crashed more often, if being installed on an average book-keeping computer without care for config.sys or any parameters...

The Fritz GUI doesn't crash in my experience. The Arena GUI is buggy and is a toy and perhaps that is the reason it is free (as in beta software rather than free as in free lunch).
