Peter Schreiner - February 1999
The company Millennium 2000 from Munich presented just before Christmas, the final version of its Millennium Chess System, under whose interface you can also integrate multiple programs (engines =). With the reactivation of the two long-serving veterans of the computer chess, Dave Kittinger (WChess2000) and John Stanback (Zarkov 5.0) we landed a real coup in terms of attractiveness engines.
One thing you can hold in WChess due to the first test results in advance: the new 32-bit application by Dave Kittinger is a real asset to the now clearly "supersaturated" with the variety of engines offered PC sector. Highly pleasing: the "newbie" not only plays a strong tactical chess, but mainly convinces through its active management game and quite comfortable to use application environment of the MCS system. The interaction with the new MCS interface but is sometimes a bit notchy and not all the functions of the user interface harmonize with WChess.
For example, the engine increases the Match against other engines ever made (not counted on), and the automatic analysis of complete CBF / EPD databases (test sets) does not work on all computer systems properly. This is probably the customary small teething problems with the introduction of a completely redesigned system, which should be resolved according to manufacturer's instructions with a patch available shortly. In normal play and analysis mode, the program ran fine on my computers.
The scope of supply delivered on a floppy disk Kittinger program is modest addition to the actual engine to find only one installation program that integrates the engine under the MCS system, an adapted to the style of play of WChess book is not there eg. Pity, because in my experience the program using the included library of genius does not always come along well. On the other hand, thanks to the newly implemented in the MCS system, modifiable tree position modify the Library at any time and adapt to their own taste. Certainly one can tease out some at WChess with corresponding "Book Tuning" still in performance. When one sees it thus positive, the user's creativity is required in this area ...
As it looks now with the skill level and style of the game WChess? For a first, I let the newbie complete the BS2830 test. The result on my K6/333 MHz with 32 HashTables was BS 2476 Elo, which WChess moves in close proximity to renowned representatives such MChess or Hiarcs 7 and a first indication that WChess will be a welcome addition to the scene. If one is based on the display of the node speed and gives this faith, it is in the new program Kittinger obviously a very fast program. The depth of the program is limited to a maximum of 40 half-moves, which is sufficient in theory at least for a mate in 20 moves.
First test matches against the elite of PC chess reinforce the positive impression. In specially conducted for this review Test matches (30 minutes per game) resulted in two identical K6/333 MHz following results:
WChess 2000 - MChess Pro 8.0 6: 4
WChess 2000 - Rebel 10.0 5 5
WChess 2000 - Hiarcs 7.0 Beta 3 ½ 6 ½
WChess 2000 - Fritz 5:32 5 ½: 4 ½
WChess 2000 - Junior 5.0 3 7
As the results show, and games, plays WChess 2000 impressively strong and striking on account of its beautiful to looking for active play. Especially in settings where the program has the opportunity to raise even under physical handicaps an active game shines the Kittinger program. On the other hand, I was in positions where it is "nothing concrete" are, for the typical computer programs, haphazard way directional pad to move - for example, with the King - Watch.
In earlier times, the Kittinger programs were praised for their excellent programming elementary playoffs, so at that time dominated the small machines the winning leadership in the final K + L + S against K properly. In this respect, Dave Kittinger has probably lightened the program.
I have a test basis WChess can try in 2000 to implement the technical leadership to win the endgame database Ken Thompson - Result: None! Otherwise WChess demonstrated fairly good knowledge of elementary endgame types and knows quite well, especially in elementary or profits guides farmers in rook endings (eg Lucena) from.
Preliminary conclusion: if the motto: what takes a long time (...) should be really true, then exactly in the case of WChess. For the long wait the freak is compensated with a Kittinger program, which in my opinion is one of the most attractive engines that are currently on the market. This WChess particularly impressive with a powerful style of play, which almost always leads to exciting games guaranteed.

I can get WChess UCI to play under Arena but it won't play to the level selected.
Anyone else had this problem?

Strength according SSDF :
On 3 different CPU.
The typical difference between a P90 and a P200MMX seems to be around +90 Elo. So, on a same hardware WChess2000 is about +40 Elo over WChess 1.06.
WChess 1.03 and WChess 1.06 are about equal.

Wchess was always well known for a bad timemangement.mephisto wrote:I can get WChess UCI to play under Arena but it won't play to the level selected.

Give Wchess more time on the clock to have a equal timeusage as the opponent.
Did you solve the problems of changing the hashsize, or to analyze a position?
Greetings

No I have just played a few active games in various UCI program's.
I'm still confused if this is WChess 2000 or an earlier version.
