Yup, about as expected.

The CCRL has Stockfish 3 rated at about 3000 Elo. Blunder 7.6.0 is rated at around 2630 Elo, which would roughly put a 370 Elo gap between the two. So I wouldn't expect Blunder to be winning very much :)

A better match-up would probably be Stockfish 1 versus Blunder 7.6.0. Stockfish 1 is still stronger mind you, according to the CCRL rating, but Blunder should definitely win some.

Thanks, interesting. I'm pretty surprised Blunder managed to win a game. Would you happen to have that PGN?

Blunder 8.0.0 released

Post by algerbrex »

Hi everyone,

I've decided to go ahead and release Blunder 8.0.0, despite some reservations (although, truthfully, I have reservations with every release). The release notes can be seen here: https://github.com/algerbrex/blunder/re ... tag/v8.0.0.

I expect Blunder 8.0.0 to be roughly 50 Elo stronger at bullet time controls.

Congratz on the release!

Here's a 40/15 game against Leoriks current dev version from the start position. I assume like me you don't have a built-in opening book? Always astounding how the engines play established openings regardless. Anyway... it was a very smooth victory for Blunder 8!

And here's the analysis on Chess.com: https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/pgn/4stWod6hgz

I'll run a few hundred (faster) matches later after work!
Thanks for sharing Thomas!

I actually suspect Leorik 2.1.9 is stronger, but yes, that will require testing  Be sure to update on the result of the match you run later!

And yes you're correct, Blunder has no built-in opening book, although it has support for connecting to polyglot style bin opening books. Probably one of the coolest parts of seeing an engine improve is seeing it discover known chess theory, such as opening choice :)

My hope was that by the next round of Division 7 I could supply a version that would promote. But with a new version of Odonata and now Blunder to compete with the opponents will be quite a bit tougher than last time. Also I wonder when Erik will release a new version of MadChess. On his blog he wrote about a beta version of 3.1 already in march.
I've been busy with family issues that needed attention the last few months. Calming down now. All I could do with MadChess was experiment with LMR formulas, which is slow and tedious. In search code, unlike evaluation code, I can't rely on Texel tuning to predict strength improvements or regressions. So I've been tweaking LMR formulas and running many games. Have found a 5 Elo improvement, so it's not wasted effort.

I really should improve the evaluation- rather than screwing around with search- to push MadChess past 2700 Elo...
