The Story Behind The Engine Names ?

The story behind naming my engine Myrddin is pretty simple. The program's name is related to my last name, Merlino, which is the Italian equivalent of Merlin, which was originally spelled Myrddin in Welsh.

The name for Blunder came from the fact that when I started writing Blunder, I was a pretty bad chess player (not great now, but I'm better), and was constantly blundering. From the beginning, I planned on my engine eventually being quite strong and robust and thought it would be pretty ironic and funny to have a strong engine named blunder. And the name has really grown on me since then, so it stuck.

I normally struggle quite a bit to find names I like for a lot of my programming projects so I'm pretty happy I was able to come up with a fun, unique name for my chess engine

"The blunders are already there, you just have to make them". One of the many memorable phrases of the famous master player Savielly Tartakower (1887-1956).
For humans anyway, but also for most engines, "Blunder" should be more suitable than e.g. KillerCobra, LionQueen, TitanChess, Perfect or Rampage (similarities with existing chess engines are purely coincidental)

For my engines:

Usurpator (Dutch for Usurper): an idea of my brother, who felt I should try to dethrone the then #1 of the World 'Sargon'.
Joker: because during development it sometimes did moves for which I thought "you can't be serious!".
Spartacus: because it could play Spartan Chess. (And yes, I know that Spartacus was actually a Roman slave, but it sounded nice.)
Micro-Max: because it was not much more than a very small version of the minimax algorithm (and the name Mini-Max was already taken).
Fairy-Max: because it was a version of micro-Max that could handle fairy pieces (originally made to guage their values).
KingSlayer: inspired by Game of Thrones; when I first heard that word I thought it was the perfect name for a chess program.
DuckSlayer: a version of KingSlayer that can play Duck Chess.
Aramis: a version of KingSlayer that can play Musketeer Chess. (Aramis of course being the alphabetically first of the 'Three Musketeers'.)
Shokidoki: because it played Shogi, and the alternation of vowels and consonants seemed OK for making it sound Japanese.
CrazyWa: because it can play Wa Shogi with piece drops, like Crazyhouse is Chess with piece drops (which it can also play).
Inferno: because it plays Tenjiku Shogi, a shogi variant where Fire Demons are the dominant piece, worth about 20 Queens.

Then I have a general chess-variant-playing program, which is not really an engine, but is integrated in its browser-based GUI, which goes by the prosaic name 'Interactive Diagram' (which refers to the GUI).

If Musketeers, then the rather melancholy Athos is definitely missing. The playing style of this engine should also express the melancholy, the joy of drinking and the unhappy love for the Femme Fatal Lady de Winter!

Oh, and I forgot to mention my engine 'HaChu'. Officially the name is a contraction of my first name Harm and Chu Shogi (which is the most important variant it plays). I wrote this in such a short time that it felt a bit like I 'sneezed it out'.

And my engine HaQiKi D for Chinese Chess. That name is kind of a pun. It could be a contraction of HArm's xiangQI Kunstmatige Intelligentie (The latter two words being Dutch for Artificial Intelligence), but the Q in western script for Chinese is pronounced as TS, and 'hatsikiday' is a Dutch exclamation for when against expectation something works out well.

Each of the engines served a different purpose, which could not be fufilled by those I already had. Often to relieve a limitation on board size or number of pieces. E.g. HaChu was designed for handling really large variants, up to 25x25, with pieces that could make double captures.

....I started to code a chess engine in 2010, a simple one, and then to port it to OpenCL to run on a GPU. "Zeta Dva" is the CPU engine, with dva meaning #2 in Yugoslav, a rewrite from scratch after I lost the code. "Zeta" (the GPU port) was the medieval name of now Montenegro, the home country of my parents, and it is the sixth letter in the Greek alphabet, so it stands for project #6.

Found your engine in the CCRL list. I'm not optimally equipped for GPU engines (yet), the really fast RTX cards are so damn expensive.

The onomastic (name research) category would be "biographical reason" in your case.

Montenegro, country and people I know less, but only the typical port city trio Split, Dubrovnic, Kotor as a Mediterranean cruise passenger. But the fjord-like entrance to the Bay of Kotor is gorgeous, indeed. Turning the ocean liners in the narrow bay is a challenge for every captain.

I hope you come back to your parents' homeland lots of times.

I thought that it came from making small blunders against top engines, for instance I replaced the a1 Rook by a Bishop and the h1 Rook with a Knight, but as you see Blunder you kept making inferior moves and Dragon 3.2 took advantage of it

Rust, funny name for a programming language!!? Seems to be quite modern and powerful, when big companies like Google, Huawei, Microsoft and Mozilla have joined to a Rust Foundation.

A quick look at your site shows me that you have to go into more detail to understand what exactly you are trying to do. In any case, the development of a chess engine that everyone can participate in.
What I don't quite understand at first sight is why you distinguish engine and program and not engine and GUI as usual.

The derivation of the name RUSTIC in its double meaning is very smart. I have also noticed that the symbols and images for the programs are not always authentic but are just someone's association. CPW should always consult with the author.
