I am confused! [d]8/8/8/5N2/8/p7/8/2NK3k w - - 0 1 Berserk and Leela thinks this is draw

Hello Jouni:

Win because the 50-move counter is set to 0 and each player can play 50 moves without captures or pawn moves before one can claim a draw by the fifty-move rule.

I set the position at the online EGTB hosted at Shredder site and followed the top moves. The starting position is a checkmate in 52 moves, as you already said. I understand that your doubt is if this position is a win or a cursed win that ends in a draw by the fifty-move rule.

As I said before, I followed the top moves and black can delay the pawn move up to the 50th move at most, just restarting the 50-move counter in the last move, ruining its chance of claiming a draw.

Please anybody check if I am wrong and black can further delay the pawn move.

Did the same in Shredder 13 GUI with online access to online endgame db, that's two possible lines.

The Huntsman can follow the last part easily when it is about Mate in 24, without Syzygy bases. I don't have the Syzygy bases but you have Jouni, hypothesis Huntsman can find the whole sequence with Syzygy bases, unless it just stops when it finds a move with Mate in X in the tablebases. Not sure.

I like how it ends with a futile pawn promotion :)

Not exactly the same: after 49.- Nb4, Peter's PGN has 49.- ..., Ka8 while yours has 49.- ..., a2. The end of the game is the same, of course... and this is exactly what I found after 49.- Nb4: only two moves for black, so I intentionally went through the line that delayed the pawn move the most.

It happens all the time with those KNN vs KP endgames. It is amazing, indeed.
