If I invented a perfect drawless chess variant, how much is it worth?

Post by Chessisgreat »

"Perfect" here only means it fixed the draw problem, and doesn't introduce new problems.

Draw problem is the biggest problem for top level chess tournaments, especially prearranged draws.

Chess's sensitivity is not good enough to distinguish the best professional chess players.

Bobby Fischer invented Chess960, and Magnus Carlsen starts Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. Draw rate becomes lower, but draw still exists.

Armageddon chess fixs the draw problem by putting time pressure on black players. It weakens the black players and lowers the game quality.

I spent over a year on the draw problem. Finally, I fixed it.

The new chess variant is named as drawless chess variant. It just likes normal chess without draws. Each chess player has the same time. Any chess engine can work in the drawless chess variant. Any chess players can get used to it in a very short time. Audience can follow the games immediately. However, for professional chess players, they need a little more time for a drawless chess variant tournament, maybe a week.

I tested it with a few CPU chess engines. Here are some results.

10 seconds per move,

Stockfish 17.1 vs Stockfish 17 in 600 games, 342-258

Stockfish 17.1 vs Stockfish 15.1 in 600 games, 467-133

Stockfish 20250205 vs shashchess38 in 200 games, 119-81

If I am not short of money, I can release the code on GitHub. I contacted a few chess organizations, including FIDE, but got no reply. I think they didn't believe it. I wrote a post somewhere else, and many didn't believe it either.

If anyone is interested, my gmail address name is "goodday2025haha".

Thanks.

Well, on chessvariants.com you will find dozens of drawless chess variants that try to be as close to orthodox Chess as possible. (Otherwise you might as well play Shogi, which is virtually drawless.) But it would still be a chess variantn and virtually no one is interested in chess variants. So as to the question "how much is it worth", a good guess would be "zilch".

about a year ago mr Kaufman already invented (quite a good version for) drawless chess,
keeping normal opening theory, posted on this forum (*) but not going to look it up for you.
Some suggested it would require another playing style, but when i tested it in a few
games it turned out that playing strategy was quite similar as in ordinary chess.

Later Uri Blass, not longer than a weeks ago in this forum suggested a drawing
margin (between move nrs a-b with b>a) and i expanded a little bit on that;
after which someone commented it would 'destroy chess'

your idea may be interesting for some, but also might receive criticism,
if it's good then it may certainly be interesting for ICCF correspondence
chess, initially as additional, optional variant.

see also
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2708067/drawless-chess

PS there are no bucks (to make) in (computer) chess nowadays btw, except for chess.com
and Chessbase.com  But you can post it trying to get eternal fame, maybe ?
As for human chess, again there are no bucks to be made unless your name is Magnus C

(*) coz i'm usually not such a malignant person i'll give a hint: it was something like win within
a(x) moves, otherwise you're lost. you can ofcourse also make a range between moves
nrs a-b, and games ending in between such move nrs would still be a draw

Thanks for you reply.

I invented another chess variant which has similar idea, but it is still different.

I checked many drawless chess variants on the internet, they are different from mine.

Yes, it is hard to earn money from chess.

In ancient times, maybe chess skill is a kind of symbol of smartness, but not now. It is just a game, and now there are too many funny games.

If you charge a license fee, nobody will play the game - so you'll have to give it away for free.

Your only hope is that it will boost your personal profile, leading to videos, book deals, talks, appearance money etc.
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory

I only hope I can sell it once. That is enough. Then the buyer owns the copyright, and can do anything he/she wants with it. The buyer can use it as a brand. Just like chess960.

I believe the drawless chess variant is more exciting than others.

I think that there is only one way to make a chess variant more popular than chess and it is to invest a lot of money in it.

If somebody give prizes of 100,000,000$ for tournaments with some chess variant every year (that only change the result in case of a draw and define a winner) then I expect the variant to be more popular than normal chess in a short time and I guess all the leading chess players are going to start playing the game and quit normal chess because they can make significantly more money from playing the variant.

That is what Magnus Carlsen is doing with Freestyle chess. When I see what he has done, I think the chess community also wants some change. So he can raise some money for the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour.

I believe my drawless chess variant is better than chess960.

Drawless chess doesn't need a new variant, just a new rule: exactly the same as normal chess, but if a game is a draw then the player with most time remaining in the clock gets the win.
