Re: Stockfish 1 with 12 threads and 2 hours vs Stockfish 17.1 with 12 threads and 1 minute, who wins?
Looks like your draw offer has been agree to in this correspondence game and that the reverse will not be played. I was hoping you would flip colors to see if old Stockfish could hold as Black.
Reading the posts it occurred to me that you really didn't know what to expect because you do not have the big picture of performance trends. At the outset I had a pretty good idea of what to expect and knew that you were giving new Stockfish way too much time for an even match. But, I had no data on SF 17.1 vs. SF 1.91 specifically. So, while the correspondence game was taking place I spent those couple weeks gathering some data points to share.
My approach is to conduct fixed node matches with a doubling of nodes per move between matches. This provides a machine-independent "skeleton" against which I can calibrate machine-dependent runs at time controls. I use Chess324 as an opening book. Chess324 is mid-way in its characteristics between a balanced book and an unbalanced book such as S. Pohl's UHO offerings.
In your first match you gave SF 17.1 60s per game, 12 threads. Then in your second match you reduced it to 0.25s / move, 8 threads. To get a calibration of these settings I got the following nearest-neighbor comparisons. My testing machine is an Intel Xeon Gold 6248R. I'll hand wave and say that's close enough to your machine for discussion.
That's nice but how can it be related to SF 1.91? To put these in perspective I've plotted these points against the curves of SF 17.1 and SF 1.91. And for good measure five intervening Stockfish families are included.
https://imgur.com/a/EZPnuYE (I seem not to have luck with image embedding using the img tag, so I've included an imgur url.)
The top horizontal line marks the estimated strength of SF 17.1 in your first match. Correspondingly, the lower line for your second match.
What jumps out at a glance is that there is no way you were going to have an even match against SF 1.91. The time odds needed for a balanced pairing are too vast to be practical. That's not to say you could not get a draw from the standard opening position, which you did eventually get with the correspondence game. But if tested on a diverse distribution of positions matches 1 and 2 are no contest.
In my next post I'll try to estimate where you would have had to set Stockfish 17.1 (retrospectively) for balanced competition in your third and fourth matches.

Re: Stockfish 1 with 12 threads and 2 hours vs Stockfish 17.1 with 12 threads and 1 minute, who wins?
jkominek wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 11:12 am Looks like your draw offer has been agree to in this correspondence game and that the reverse will not be played.
And for good measure five intervening Stockfish families are included.Code: Select all
Stockfish 17o1 Hash 256 Threads 12 TC 60 vs. Stockfish 17o1 Hash 512 Threads 1 Nodes 8388608 [26, 578, 44] -9.7 Elo Stockfish 17o1 Hash 512 Threads 8 MoveTime 0.25s vs. Stockfish 17o1 Hash 512 Threads 1 Nodes 1048576 [28, 541, 79] -27.4 Elo

The top horizontal line marks the estimated strength of SF 17.1 in your first match. Correspondingly, the lower line for your second match.

Yes, I agree for a draw and my point was only that more time help old stockfish.
With black I expect old stockfish to lose because it seems not to understand the french defence and may choose the french defence as black. It may be mopre interesting if new stockfish get 1/4 second per move against some hours per move of old stockfish because in that case maybe new stockfish is not going to be able to convert the advantage it get as happened in my last fixed depth game

Re: Stockfish 1 with 12 threads and 2 hours vs Stockfish 17.1 with 12 threads and 1 minute, who wins?
For match 3, SF 17.1 was left at 0.25s / move, while SF 1.91 was increased to 120s / move for a 480x time odds. After making some measurements on my testing machine I get an estimate of about 2G nodes / move on average. Then for match 4, the correspondence game, Uri set a target of 100 G nodes per move for SF 1.91.
I don't have direct measurements at those large node budgets. (Fixed nodes per move games are run single threaded.) So that leaves no choice but to go out on a ledge and attempt extrapolation. Here's what I get as a plot.

Myself I find these Stockfish family technology curves handy for anticipating what to expect when old engines face off against new. And, having gone through this exercise I'm quite curious as to how the soon-to-be-released Stockfish 18 will stack up.

- Match 3: equal competition is SF 17.1 set at 55,000 nodes / move, node ratio ~ 38,900.
Match 4: equal competition is SF 17.1 set at 173,000 nodes / move, node ratio ~ 577,000.

By accident I've discovered that images display in the board if you leave the url outside of a img or url tag. Go figure.
Reposing second plot.
