Re: It's time for this position again
Hi John,JVMerlino wrote:I've dug this one up a few times since it was played a little over seven years ago, and I don't think any engine definitively answered the question one way or another.
This is a position from round 3 of Chessmaster vs. GM Larry Christiansen:
[d]8/p1p5/Pp1p2nk/1P1Bq1r1/2P1Pprp/1Q6/5RPP/3R3K b - - 0 53
At this point, Larry played 53...Rg3?! Afterwards, he claimed it was winning. But unfortunately he blundered later on in the game and lost.
But now that we have all these new incredibly strong engines (no comment about their origins necessary), I would very much appreciate it if any of you with top-end hardware could run this position and see if any engine can find a win for black AFTER playing Rg3. Bonus if an engine actually DOES play Rg3!
Here's the game, for your amusement:

Hi David,yanquis1972 wrote:firebird with 'test position' settings (SS off, VNM on, VR=10)...
I suppose
SS = NMR Smooth Scaling
VNM = Null Move Verification
VR = Verification Reduction
How (where) did you find these settings?
Why do they help in this case?

Re: It's time for this position again
i didn't find them, just made them up. i'm not hep to programming lingo and only have a vague-to-no idea of what those terms mean (smooth scaling? no idea), but my guess is that it forces firebird to look deeper into moves it would normally prune out earlier in the search. at any rate it demonstrably helped in that position. not sure how strong the settings would be in actual game play or even if they're good in general for test positions, though i would assume so.
