I doubt if the Rybka team would enter hardware that they have not tested, Vas own smaller cluster that I believe he used in the Mundial tournament is probably busy too with his own testing of Beta Rybka 4. So I don't think they will enter at the last moment, they probably wait for a better occasion, with a more polished product.

Vas asked Lukas if he wanted to play in CCT12, and Lukas said that he was doing maintenance on the cluster or something like that.

Also, it wouldn't look good if Rybka lost a game in this tough field. Cluster Sjeng, i9 Shredder, now Deep Junior......

Rybka has played in every single tournament that I remember in recent years. It even played the ACCA tournaments. I think that the only major tournament it missed was the HGM monthly blitz (laugh but not too much, it is becoming more and more popular, thanks HGM). When the monthly blitz becomes the Formula One of CC, Gaviota will proudly claim that it won the Grand Prix of September 2009 :-), but I digress.

On the other hand, some of the the other major commercial engines not always appear.

I'm rooting for Richard Pijl this time, the team is always well prepared and Arturo is one of the best opening specialists. It would have been fun to see them have another go against the Rybka cluster, I only know how they played against Rybka in Leiden but I believe the last two occasions of their games there were both draws!

Rybka is afraid of the Gaviota Tablebases. Proof: Last time it played Gaviota, Rybka had a clever strategy not to face the endgame tablebases. It killed gaviota in less that 25 moves. Do you think that strategy was a coincidence? It got away with it then, but wait until we reach 5 pieces next time!

If necessary I can operate Stockfish if needed. I have operated Stockfish/Glaurung back from CCT10/CCT11.

Due to the respect for the tournament polices that are in place. I find rule 2a1 not reasonable for the enjoyment of the tournament. I think people would like to see chess program to be in a tournament. I understand the need Author is more preferable to join but we can't always guarantee that.

It's should be author call whether to allow an operator to run his program in the tournament in CCT or not if he is not able to join himself. Perhaps Author must know if the operator is reliable enough to run his engine with proper interface. We certainly cannot forced authors to be online if they are on busy schedule.

im afraid if we make certain restrictions for operators we may not see enough chess programs playing in CCT with that being said I am glad to see Shredder in CCT

Hi Sherif,

Nice to hear from you. I think one of the Stockfish authors may show up online just once. I do remember Tord coming online and chatting in channel 64 previous CCT's.

Since you have experience being an operator for Stockfish, I don't doubt you will have any difficulty in setting up the engine in event of any crashes (however very rare the case maybe).

In other words, the rules should be considerd a joke, and should only be enforced for the purpose of preventing programs like micro-Max to enter. But if they cause inconvenience to strong programs like Sjeng or Stockfish, it goes without saying that they should be transgressed, if not trampled...

I feel a little uncomfortable every year when the CCT comes up. As explained repeatedly, I personally have very little interest in the CCT, and no desire to participate. However, Stockfish is free software, and users are free to do whatever they like with it, including participating in tournaments (as long as the tournament rules allow it, of course).

Regardless of whether Stockfish participates or not, some people will be unhappy. There are people who want to see as many strong programs as possible participate, and there are people who think that playing against programs run by operators not associated to the author(s) makes the tournament less attractive. I sympathize with both groups of people, but more with the latter group than the former.

Therefore, the new and stricter rules concerning operators this year was a relief to me. The new rules made it crystal clear that Stockfish would not be allowed to participate, and there would be nothing to discuss -- or so I assumed. I'm a little disappointed that the discussion still comes up.

The rules do not cause inconvenience to Stockfish. On the contrary, as explained above, I think the new rules are an improvement. And Sjeng is an entirely different case, as the operator belongs to the Sjeng team.

There are already more than enough possibilities for hobby enthusiasts
and chess program lovers to test 'their' adopted chess programs in tournaments.
Thus it is very important to have at least a few real tournaments left
which have completely different priorities for programmers, book experts and their team.

There are all kinds of players in a team.

Captain, Wicket-keeper, Bowler, Fielder, Batsmen, Substitutes, Manager, Coach etc

One would argue what exactly is meant by the "team". There's no team without a programmer, and _he_ has to decide who wants to be in his team.

I don't think that it's the TD or general public that can decide who is in what team.

What's this all about? Those have nothing to do with computerchess,
I guess this was just a bad exercise in analogy?

This is exactly what I said the public should have nothing to decide
about the tournament rules at all, still it tries to to change the rules,
or cry about this or that.
I have no idea what you want to argue about it.
One should accept that it is mainly a programmers tournament('team' was accepted,
because of various reasons) and of course the TD has the last word.
