I'll agree with you there, except what you are doing is something special with the mixing of xboard and UCI. xboard protocol really has no idea what a GUI book is. I would guess there are a lot more engines than just this one that don't work with GUI book?
I tried Amundsen on the command line, and it does indeed require a complete FEN to set the position. Thanks for looking into this!
Surprisingly few WB engines lack "force" mode : about 2% !
They are the ones that cannot presently use GUI books.
A GUI book is a mode of operation of the GUI, which is not really related to the egine-GUI communication protocol. The only requirement to implement one is that the protocol supports forcing moves for both sides into the engine. WinBoard protocol has had this option from the beginning. If the option is used for implementing a GUI book or simply resuming adjourned games is beyond the protocol. There is nothing "UCI-like" to a GUI book.
