Just as i was preparing to put the Mobile Master up for auction on Ebay(due to its lackluster performance in these matches) it strikes back with a smashing win as Black
Interestingly the player of the Black pieces has won 3/4 games in these matches
perhaps even more enjoyable was the fact that the Nigel Short chose to open with an English which was covered in the module already in the MM!
this spared me the trials and tribulations of module Removal-Insertion

Nigel Resigns here
the MM will only resign when it is faced with a forced mate
to break the tie of the second match i will play a tie-breaker with the MM playing White

Re: Paris 09 Dedicated Chess Computer Tournament
The Tie Breaker...
The Mobile Master has white and after Sir Nigel's first reply i get the call to change to module "E"
This time i get the hang of it and power down the EAG...remove and insert..very seamlessly..no pieces wind up on the carpet

After only 25 moves and we are already in a drawn endgame
if i was playing in the actual tournament i would make the 25th move and then offer a draw here .
with four other games going the Tournament organizer is happy to get games over as quickly as possible so the next round can begin
in addition i will be the only competitor playing via the Internet and this is a bit of an imposition on the other players as they are required to input the moves via the computer as well
whether or not the operator of the NS would accept would depend of course on the effect a draw would have on his current standing
as this is not the actual tournament i decided to play on to move 50 to see if any computer manages to blunder and lose this

i decided to offer the NS a Draw here and i also accepted for it
the MM was actually showing an Eval of +0.00 while Sir Nigel was showing +.23
Conclusion...
clearly the use of the Fide ECO modules raises the strength of the Mobile to equalize with Sir Nigel
now i realize that only 5 games is a very small sample ..still..
from an 0-2 score without them to 1.5-1.5 with them
the Nigel Short has an opening book of 20,000+ moves and the MM with only a 3000 move book needed the extra book modules to equalize .
not even the 27000+ book of the CB 16 Module could foot the bill ..but with the Fide book...the MM is good to go

Re: Paris 09 Dedicated Chess Computer Tournament
Having established equality with the strongest Engine entered in the Tournament.. The Mobile Master sets its sights on the 2-3 strongest engines in attendance at Paris
seeded third at 1988 is the Saitek Bravo programmed by Morsch(of Fritz Fame)
while i don't own the Bravo i do own the Mephisto Miami ..which is exactly the same computer except sold under the Mephisto label ..instead of the Saitek label
Catching the Red Eye Flight from NYC to the Sunshine State (Florida) i settled in for a two game match
the previously played games have seen Black winning far more then white
i wonder why that is?
perhaps because at this short TC White who has the first move..is the first to blunder?
anyway...the trend has reversed itself with these two games each won by white

Thanks for sharing the test games. Looks like the EAG-MM/ECO will be able to give a good account of itself in the contest. Should be a treat to watch.

Hi Steve
I have read before that you don't own the Saitek Bravo?
Why is this as you appear to own nearly every other chess computer on the planet.

Bryan

Re: Paris 09 Dedicated Chess Computer Tournament
Well even earlier in the thread i also mentioned i don't own any of the Dual Processor EAG's either..so we can see that the gaps in the collection proper are wide indeed
as to the Bravo/Miami .they are identical in terms of engine ,Hardware and Cosmetics..so i never really cared to acquire the Bravo
however i do reserve the right to pick it up in the future
Hedging My Bet Regards

Re: Paris 09 Dedicated Chess Computer Tournament
Arriving in Dallas the Mobile Master is a bit tired from his whirlwind worldwide training tour in preparation for Paris
arriving at the playing hall..we are greeted by Richard Lang himself who will operate the Mondial XL sporting his 1986 World Champion program
the MXL is the second seed at Paris and boasts a 1994 Active Elo rating
a 35,000+ ply opening book completes the package
Game one has the MXL playing White..

Not a great result for the match..a draw and a loss against the 3rd seed
The Master couldnt stay on to play a few more games( and what would amount to certain victory)
A match has already been arranged with Dave Kittinger who heard about the worldwide training tour
the plane to Hong Kong(and the fifth seeded Novag Ruby) leaves soon
we will have to wait for the tournamant itself to even things up with the MXL

Re: Paris 09 Dedicated Chess Computer Tournament
The Mobile arrives in Hong Kong to take on the Novag Ruby
Kittinger will have two chess computers represented in Paris
the Super Expert C6 and the Ruby
the SE has an active Elo of 1971 only 11 Elo higher then the Ruby
i elected to play the Ruby instead of the SE because it is a small hand held portable while the SE is a large wooden auto-sensory which will take up too much room on my desk considering that the Mobile Master is also a large computer
Ruby has an opening book of 12000+ moves and in the first game was in book until move 11

The Master was sporting an Eval of +10.51 and was signing autographs for an adoring crowd
1.5-.5 ..a nice decisive result
hopefully the Master will meet Ruby in the first round in Paris
Having dispatched the Ruby so effortlessly and quickly ..we still had some free time on our hands so we contacted Chrilly Donninger who agreed to pit his Tiger Grenadier(seeded 8th at 1895 )against the Traveling Mobile Master
this should be a piece of cake

Re: Paris 09 Dedicated Chess Computer Tournament
The Grenadier is perhaps the most interesting computer competing at Paris..although not exactly considered rare..it contains the only program Christian Donninger(Of Hydra Fame) ever produced for a dedicated chess computer
rated 1895 (Active Elo) it contains a 20,000+ book
The Masters larger book was worthless in the first game because both computers were out of book by move 3...

only 18 moves and the Grenadier has won a Rook!
i checked all of the Mobiles settings and even the level
everything was in order..except for the actual position on the board!
i was certain this would be a walk-over for the Mobile
i was about to resign in disgust and if this were the actual tournament..i would have resigned

only 18 moves and the Grenadier has won a Rook!

i checked all of the Mobiles settings and even the level
everything was in order..except for the actual position on the board!
i was certain this would be a walk-over for the Mobile
i was about to resign in disgust and if this were the actual tournament..i would have resigned
however..i let play continue...

Many of us authors turn the resign/draw options off during tournaments.
I haven't even coded in resign and draw options (except for the
regulation ones).
The reason: it is a programming contest. There is plenty of
room in a chess program for coding and design errors. Resigning
is just giving up on your work and assuming that the opponent
doesn't have any bugs to reveal. As you've seen here, resigning
can give your opponent a lucky break.
