Test position

Post by Tord Romstad »

I wish I could present a nice combination by Glaurung 2, but although my new engine wins more games than it loses against its older brother, it always wins in ugly and boring ways. The position given below, therefore, is from one of the games were Glaurung 1.2.1 won against the new Glaurung:
[d]rq1r2k1/1ppn1pp1/p1n1p2p/P1PpP2P/1P1P2Nb/2NQ4/R2B1PP1/1R4K1 w - - 12 27
Glaurung 1.2.1 sacrificed all three (!) minor pieces with 27. Bxh6! gxh6 28. Nxh6+ Kg7 29. Nxf7! Kxf7 30. Qg6+ Ke7 31. Nxd5+!

How long does your favorite engine take to play 27. Bxh6? Glaurung 1.2.1 with a single thread on my Core Duo plays the move after 8 seconds. Glaurung 2-epsilon/2 still does not find it after one minute.

The game:

I was quite surprised to see Hamsters 0.3 pick up this move immediately and hold it. After a while, I realized I was asleep though. When I woke up, Hamsters was playing g3...

Actually it looks more like "Petrosian DNA" as he played closed and semi-closed positions

For some reason Toga 1.3x4 also did not like 27.Bxh6 although all the Glaurung settings I tried eventually play it.

By the way I think it is a pity if Glaurung's Position Learning feature would go if Tord thinks that Glaurung is not used for analysis purposes, as I posted earlier. I have used Glaurung often to analyze Chess960 positions, usually with multi PV on to test a lot of possible moves in the opening position. Because I prefer to have directly reproducible results that I can post or other people could check, I usually leave position learning off. But the majority of people that analyze their games or make opening books will be doing this with position learning on. So maybe with a bigger cache it would be used even more!

Some quick results for the position:

Interesting that TogaII-1.3-X4 (defaults with 512 MB Hash) comes up with Bxh6 and stays with it :

Eelco's efforts showed that TogaII-1.3-X4 would not come up with Bxh6. I can only guess that hash table size has something to do with this; our two processors seem about the same speed (based on time to reach depth 16 for example).

All in all, Bxh6 is a very interesting move.
