Re: Test Position 9...Nf3

Post by Marek Soszynski »

The diagram position has been reached several times in actual play. Black often fails to play 9...Nf3+!

Here is the earliest instance in my ChessBase sources:

Hiarcs is of course much faster.

I implemented another idea, nothing groundbreaking but Glaurung now has a Nullmove extension!

The idea is very simple; if the Nullmove fails low for the side who really has the move in the position, there is no nullmove pruning possible. But there is a lot of information in the nullmove-search that you do not really use, other than to decide to prune or not. For instance it should be possible to extract some statistical information with which you could build an estimate of the error margin for the eval of every position from which you start a null-move search! This is very valuable information! But it is a bit beyond me at the moment to do a good implementation of this :( For now I just do a very simple thing: if the nullmove search fails low to 3 pawns below beta, extend the search in case of a non-PV node. Tord does not do any nullmove pruning for PV-nodes, not as far as I could see that is, so there it is not possible :D

The present idea and the implementation is a bit crude, Tord would probably only try this at a later stage. I don't know all the ins and outs of the program but after a few tries the worst bugs seemed to be exterminated :D

This is Build 55 with Nullmovextensions (sic), not very fast but I do like the scores that Glaurung Mjolnir is getting 8-)

I'm not sure if I should publish details of the new code, I am really a bit nervous about that more than 100 elopoints the new Rybka will be adding to its advantage, so I am doing a bit of damage control at the moment... Really, I'm serious! But it is up to Tord actually and as I have played very few testgames it is too early anyway to talk about real improvements on my side. :)

Re: Glaurung with Nullmove extension! Re: Test Position 9...

Post by Eelco de Groot »

I am not sure that the Nullmove modification is a real improvement, but at least the first testgames against Naum 3.1 were still okay. The first game was a clear win for Naum though.

The second game was more fun, Glaurung sacrificed a full Bishop and it didn't look like he would see anything back from his invested material, but in the late middlegame the tables turned :)
