Glaurung has almost established itself as the strongest free engine. The reign of Glaurung as the strongest freeware engine is just around the corner, how long will it last, that I cannot tell..

If it weren't for Toga........??
Best,
You sure confused me there too!
No offence, but it still carries Fruit's name whatever Toga.......?? it is .
It's its birthmark!
Glaurung is a very strong engine, only a few elo points away from Toga. It has a far greater SMP scaling than Toga. IMHO, it has great potential in surpassing any engine anytime soon. I have high hopes for Tord to do this. But we are trying our best too to keep the friendly competition in the open-source development.

I said the reign is just around the corner, I didnt say it started yet. Currently its almost as strong as Toga, so with one or two versions it should be able to surpass it.

Maybe, and maybe not. And don't forget Booot, Crafty, Scorpio and Sloppy.
But who cares? It doesn't matter which program is the strongest -- the important thing is that we all keep improving, not which program is the strongest at any given point in time or which program is improving most rapidly. Glaurung is not a competitor of Toga or any other chess program, open source or not.

I stand corrected Thomas/Tord. Continuous engine development for improvement ( whether to be number one or just for fun ) is what makes this hobby more additive/interesting. It's just coincidental that Glaurung and Toga were involved in the discussion. The rest of the engines also deserve the same treatment, open-source or not.
