Hardware question

Just bought an HP Laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250, was wondering what would this compare to on And dual cores? Will chess programs run strong?

Well, basically the Core 2 Duo is a very good processor of course, also for chess. If you really want the highest performance you have to bear in mind that the lower priced mobile versions are more energy efficient but the consequence is also they are not clocked as high as more expensive desktop Core 2 Duo processors. The T5250 as far as I can see goes at 1.5 GHz and has 2 Mb L2 cache. If you would want to use it on chess servers and get a high blitz rating, you will meet of course faster computers there, but then again how important is that for you?

Other than that, for analysis etc. a Core 2 Duo is certainly good enough I suppose. The T5500, also meant for laptops I think with 2 Mb L2 cache but at 1.66 GHz will be slightly faster, there is one T5500 listed by Charles Roberson on the Fritz 9 Schachbenchmark at around 4.82 Pentium IIIs:

(I think you typo'ed and meant AMD dual cores, rather than And dual cores?)

Can't give any solid numbers, but I can say that the AMD Dual core laptops tend to be clocked much faster (around 2ghz and up to 2.4g) than the core2 / pentium2 laptops, which usually are around 1.5g.

So even if the core2 is better for chess on a clock-by-clock basis, I'd think an extra 25% clock rate of the AMD stuff would probably be enough to give comparable results.

The one area that I suspect would be more significant would be the Core2's larger cache size. The Core2's is much larger (2mb+) than what the AMD Turion's have (512k)

I have a TL-58 (1.9ghz) laptop that I can run a test program on, if you want. I don't have much of a selection of chess programs though, so it'll need to be free & readily available.

It is probably better than anything AMD has at the moment... I am not sure how the 1.5ghz speed compares to the latest opterons, but core for core, it is probably better. Of course quad core and up chips will be better but that's not a bad one. I have a 2.0ghz core2 duo in my laptop...
