Hello,
I have played Internet chess for fifteen years at several Internet chess servers including at both Chessbase (CB) Playchess and the Internet Chess Club (ICC). I switched to Playchess a few years ago thinking that it would be programed with the most up to date software advancements and chess commands.
I have become quite discouraged and disillusioned with Playchess. I suspect that most players are being sucked into the Playchess world by the one-year free membership, when they purchase chess software from (CB). Players see the pretty front end Playchess GUI, i.e. the windows chess board and think it is the greatest chess server ever.
In reality the Playchess front end leaves something to be desired, i.e.: the chessboard is fixed and has no float command, the way WinBoard floats. In addition, all the other pop-up windows are fixed and cannot float, making poor use of my computer screen. Conclusion: the front end GUI looks pretty, but in reality it falls short even by the aged standards of WinBoard.
The back end script at Playchess does not have one-tenth the commands available to a knowledgeable player at ICC. CB has had plenty of time to see what commands are available at ICC and add them to their Playchess back end script, but they have failed.
I am saddened and frustrated with CB, they have human capital with the expertise and the required revenue stream to improve the Playchess server, but it seems CB has fallen on their laurels and refuse to upgrade the Playchess server to be number one. CB seems to be happy just being yet another ubiquitous chess server, in the nebulous world of cyberspace chess servers.
In reality, Playchess is just another Lycos or Yahoo chess server and nothing more.
Shame...Shame...Shame
Cordially,
Sean
