man cannot live on wine alone Dr.D.. so i am going to try these two positions on a normal "workaday" dedicated computer instead of the Revelation
for these two positions i choose the Saitek GK2000 from my storage vaults
the GK 2000 has a Frans Morsch program and is rated about 1900 Elo
after 30 minutes and 10 ply ..the GK wants to play Nb3(blocking the b pawn and along with it ..blocking any hope of perhaps playing the b4 advance on the next move..

and now for position 4 Regards
Steve

18.Qf2!
Here the GK 2000 (slightly upset that its first move was not best)..insists on moving the Knight yet again..(for spite i think)
it will play Na5 after 9 ply and 36 minutes

Hi Steve,
Tough positions,I promissed no trivial ones
BTW,I'll elaborate more lately regarding the 18.Qf2! move....you can't even imagine how deep positional planning is hiding behind it
BTW,even the top chess engines can't find these two moves,at least at a reasonable time....
Petrosian will fry your hardware regards,
Dr.D

yes as i expected ..Dr.Wael Deeb wrote: BTW,even the top chess engines can't find these two moves,at least at a reasonable time....

but you are also making matters even harder by choosing positions using your expertise as a book author and strong player

perhaps in the future ..we can see an example of Petrosians endgame play which was also considered beautiful
i realize of course we need to steer clear of EGTB's here so this might be a bit tricky to post

True....note that I've collected 666 Petrosian games and I am going through them move by move to find the toughest positions....I have no books about Petrosian's games....I remember that I had one,but when I searched my books,it was missing....so I start picking the positions myself,I am also training this waySteve B wrote:yes as i expected ..Dr.Wael Deeb wrote: BTW,even the top chess engines can't find these two moves,at least at a reasonable time....

Yeah, got that....no,didn't rise high enough to write books yet, with my occupation I lack the time factor....Steve B wrote:actually i meant opening book author(for PC Engines) and not book author as in written booksDr.Wael Deeb wrote:True....note that I've collected 666 Petrosian games and I am going through them move by move to find the toughest positions....I have no books about Petrosians games....I remember that I had one,but when I searched my books,it was missing....so I start picking the positions myself,I am also training this waySteve B wrote:yes as i expected ..Dr.Wael Deeb wrote: BTW,even the top chess engines can't find these two moves,at least at a reasonable time....

Re: Tigran Petrosian_selected positions_03
Now....It's obvious that the 15th move is played to prevent black's assault on the queen's side....
As for the 18th move, the main purpose of this move can be seen from the game itself as it continued....
18....d5 19. dxe5 Nxe5 20.Bc2 Bg7 21. Ba7 Qc7 22. Bb6 Qb8 23. Ba7 Qc7 24. Bb6 Qb8 25. Ba7 Qc8? 26. Bd4
h5 27. h3 h4 28. Nf1 dxe4 29. fxe4 Ned7 30. Nfd2 c5 31. Nxc5 Nxc5 32. bxc5 Bxe4
33. Bb3 Bf5 34. Ra7 Nd7 35. Nf3 Qb8 1-0
Some notes:
_Black's 25th move is weak and open the way for white to accopmlish there attacking manoeuvre on the queen side....
_After his 35th move, spassky resigned because of the logical move 36. c6!
I think that these games from the past are so valuable because they reflect a deep positional understanding of the game and hence are tough even for the current top engines running on a decent hardware....

Re: Tigran Petrosian_selected positions_03
good analysis Dr.D ..Thanks
the problem with these positions is that they are not very popular for posting replies here because they do not lend themselves well to correct replies by engines
they do not leave a "warm and fuzzy comfort feeling "that some of the other positions posted here do ,which are purely tactical in nature
so we see positions being posted that involve piece sacs and the engines see them in 12 seconds or 17 seconds..why even i can find the correct moves for some of them
Seriously though..i do think it is informative to show both types of positions..
the purely tactical which plays to the brute strength of today's engines running on powerful hardware
and the purely positional ..where we can see much progress can still be made by program authors today
Brute Force Regards
