Deep Fritz - a classic for my collection

Post by Kaj Soderberg »

Browsing on the net i ran into articles about the ultimate commercialized MP Dinosaur, Deep Fritz, year of birth being 2000.

I wonder about two things:
1. Would it run under XP, and maybe even Vista?
2. Is it somehow/somewhere available?

OKOK, i realize DF is not a Rybka 3 beater, but i always find it interesting to see what moves an older top program can produce on today's hardware on longer time controls.

Cheers,

Kaj

I don't know what the amount would be in your currency but this Australia store has it listed. I've never ordered from them since I wouldn't feel secure in reading a credit card number over an international phone call, or sending the number by fax. Payment by post is an option. An inquiry by email would be wise if interested. The only thing it reads on the page for the listing is "Deep Fritz" ($179.00) but bet that is the one.

Home page is still being currently updated so website is still alive - http://www.chessdiscountsales.com/

Warning: The below web store might no longer be in business, but I post the page so the system requirements of Deep Fritz can be seen. The requirements on the page reflect what was shown on a web archive search of an early 2001 Chessbase products page. Perhaps would run on XP too.

Other than the above, find someone wanting to sell a used one and ebay type site checks from time to time.

edit- The only thing that would bother me personally about getting these older programs is, if there were updates to them how would you know, and where could you hope to get the updates from today?

Thanks, i'll give it a think. Maybe i will accept an offer to buy DF second hand . I might just check that firm out by the way. It is late in Holland. I'll sleep on it. As far as i remember there were no updates for DF.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Kaj!

Answer to the first question: -No problems, it works like a charm on all my Quad's with Vista 64 bit and also on my other test-computers (with Win 2000 and Win XP); though it's of course not using more than one core on the A1200/K6-2 450-machines.

I have seen Deep Fritz 7 for sale even nowadays under for example the designation "Brains in Bahrain", but havn't seen the earlier Deep Fritz being sold anywhere.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip. I was already watching Ebay on a daily basis, but now i will be watching Amazon too. There is now a DF version 8 under another label and i know there is a DF7 rebranded in the market, but you never know if the original DF(6) will pop up being itself or disguised within a package.

Best regaqrds,

Kaj
