What are the best books for a beginner/intermediate on pawns

Post by stwils »

Someone just told me that the soul of chess was pawns.
I am not advanced at all - really little more than a beginner who wants to get better.
What is a good book on how best to use pawns?

Hi Susan,

Don't worry about what others are telling you.

Pawns or no pawns, Relying heavily on quotes of wisdom at this stage is not the way to go for any beginners.

I'd suggest that you get the copy of ChessMaster - 11 Chess Playing program. Play a game against chess characters and climb your way up the ladder. I think there's a separate section in the software that has some tutorials for beginners. Then you would have pretty good idea of all basic stuffs.

Then you can get back to reading Strategy/Tactical books recommended to you by members here.

The best book I've ever read concerning pawns is:
Pawn Power in Chess by Hans Kmoch
The main concepts in the book are quite easy.
But attempting to play to implement these ideas..
that is not so easy! ;-)

But Swami is also right. The best way to learn about chess is by playing it.

Tactics, tactics, tactics!
This would be the first step of improving your game. Get a few books on tactics or search in the internet for tactics positions for solving. There are plenty available. If you are looking for a beginners book, there are many available in your local library.
