Nvidia Tesla

A personal supercomputer at last?

Can it solve highly calculation-intensive tasks such as problems involving quantum mechanical physics, weather forecasting, climate research (including research into global warming), molecular modeling (computing the structures and properties of chemical compounds, biological macromolecules, polymers, and crystals), physical simulations (such as simulation of airplanes in wind tunnels, simulation of the detonation of nuclear weapons, and research into nuclear fusion), cryptanalysis, and the like?

Most important of all: CAN RYBKA RUN ON THIS BABY?

Well I've installed Linux on mine and running some perft tests showed it to be half the speed of my Pentium D 925 (3.0Ghz) also running Linux. So while it might have great processing power in there somewhere it's not accessible and therefore non-existent.

Cheers,

Here's the PS3 hardware : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_hardware
I don't see where it's 1000 times faster than today Pc home computers ...

It isn't. The video processor has a lot of power, as does many other graphics cards. But that doesn't help a chess program run any faster without a ton of rewriting and even then there are substantial issues to overcome dealing with very low memory bandwidth between the graphics card and external memory.

the VGA cpu processor of the ps3, it´s a lot of bad, that is the motiv because xbox360 is better that ps3, to play, to program, to programers, and better cpu vga... ps3, have a good cpu, but a VERY nvidea vga cpu... very very bad, and have "only" 256 MB of ram... while xbox 360 have 512 MB years ago...

ps3. is died... remember sega, similar ... the past is condenate to again happend...

Did you want to turn this thread into a fanboy console flamewar? I'm sure there are many who would be happy to argue with you and make it into one...

Emre,

The G70 GPU in the Playstation 3 has only one fourth the memory of the newer GTX 280 GPU. The PC GPU which has 240 cores coupled with 4 to 8 core CPUs such as the Nehalem chip blow Playstation 3 out of the water and will Run Rybka 3. Playstation can't run Rybka yet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem_(m ... hitecture)

The G70 GPU is old technology put out by NVidia, the same folks who created the GTX 260 and 280 GPUs for the PC. You get what you pay for.

For video games the Playstation 3 is a nice toy for kids and adults like you and me who enjoy video games.

"In June 2008 Nvidia released their new flagship GPUs named the GTX 280 and GTX 260. The cards used the same basic Unified Architecture deployed in the previous 8 and 9 series cards, but with a tune-up in power. Both of the cards take as their basis the gt200 GPU. This GPU contains 1.4 billion transistors on a 65nm fabrication. According to TSMC, it has the largest die area of any chip ever fabricated. The GTX 280 has 240 shaders (stream processors) and the GTX 260+ has 216 shaders. The GTX 280 has 1GB of GDDR3 VRAM and uses a 512 bit bus. The GTX 260+ has 896MB of GDDR3 VRAM on a 448 bit bus. The GTX 280 allegedly provides approximately 933 GFLOPS of floating point power."
