Hi, I looked at both the Intel Xeon Quad cores and the Intel Core i7 and I cannot see much difference.
Is there really any difference?
Intel Core i7
Intel Xeons
Thank you,
Sean

Hi,
Core 2 Quad (aka Penryn) for servers and workstations are Xeon series 54xx and below. Core i7 for servers and workstations (aka Nehalem-EP)are Xeon series 55xx. Benchmarks of Xeon 5570 you can find here:

It appears that core 2 duo e8600 3.33 ghz is as good as
core 2 quad q9650 3.29 ghz. and cost a lot less.
Best to you,
Gerold.

I see:Yar wrote:Here is results of Rybka 3 and Fritz running on different harware:

Code: Select all
425kN/s Intel i7 920 @2.67GHz 4000MHz 4 CPU Phil Harris
407kN/s Xeon X5460 @3.16GHz 3791MHz 8 CPU Reachdepth
Because i suspect it might be 8 CPUs(cores).

No...Intel i7 920 @2.67GHz is 4 core machineGeorge Tsavdaris wrote:I see:Yar wrote:Here is results of Rybka 3 and Fritz running on different harware:

Is it really 4 CPU the Intel i7 of the above result?Code: Select all

I think it is not accurate to take the results from Fritzmark from 8 core and compare them to 4 core machines. Although the Kns are more it does not seem to play stronger for some reason. At least that is what some of the Core i7 testers have mentioned.

Re: Difference between an Intel Xeon Quad and Intel Core i7
Core i7 like AMD Athlons 64, Opterons and Phenoms has built-in memory controller into processor. Chess programs work very hard with memory. Thats the main reason why core i7 is so good for chess engines compare to Core 2. At the same speed and number of cores Core i7 is about 30-35% faster than Core 2.Sedat Canbaz wrote:No...Intel i7 920 @2.67GHz is 4 core machineGeorge Tsavdaris wrote:I see:Yar wrote:Here is results of Rybka 3 and Fritz running on different harware:

Re: Difference between an Intel Xeon Quad and Intel Core i7
Hi, so just to clarify, you are advising me that the i7 is a Xeon 4-core CPU? Is it the strongest Xeon now?
I checked at newegg.com and the Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor is selling for under $300, a fair price for such power.
Does anyone sell a dual CPU motherboard for the i7?
Can someone tell me the difference between a dual socket and a quad socket CPU?
Thank you,
Sean

Re: Difference between an Intel Xeon Quad and Intel Core i7
Sean,
There are 3 Nehalems available for market right now:
i7 920 (2,66Ghz), i7 940 (2,93Ghz) and i7 965 Extreme (3,2Ghz with unlock multiplayer). All of them are single socket only. To use one of these CPUs you need motherboard based on Intel X58 chipset. Socket for Nehalem has 1366 pins.
Nehalem CPUs for dual socket (Nehalem EP) will be called Xeon 55xx. They will be available in q1 2009.
For quad core socket configuration you need Xeon 7xxx series, for example Xeon 7460 supports quad CPU configuration and each CPU has 6 cores (total 24 cores).
Nehalem for quad sockets probably will be called Xeon 75xx or 76xx.
