Press [F7] (or Options/Appearance... from the menu) and click PGN. Default is: Save move inforamation: Save mainline.
UNCHECK THAT!!!
Thanks. Please turn off this most stupid default setting. Enjoy your PGN files being 90% smaller. Also, you won't put this stupid annoying bullshit into message boards anymore. Thank you a lot.

I can't agree more....
_No one can hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward….

This was one of the features I noticed about Arena that WinBoard did not have. But from the way you talk about it, I gather it is best to keep it that way...

I didn't think he said it was bad. He said it was bad as a default option. This was one of the features I noticed about Arena that WinBoard did not have. But from the way you talk about it, I gather it is best to keep it that way...

Correct. It IS good as an option, but it is absolutely ABSURD as a default. The good thing about it is though: You see quickly who is an idiot.Michel wrote:I didn't think he said it was bad. He said it was bad as a default option.

So is there any interest to have this in WinBoard (as non-default option)? For it is rather trivial to implement.

Well we like it in Arena and Winboard does a few of the things that Arena does.hgm wrote:So is there any interest to have this in WinBoard (as non-default option)? For it is rather trivial to implement.
How is the Yace thing coming along btw? Is there any solution so far?
I was just thinking that perhaps Dieter himself could help.

Re: Arena users: UNCHECK save mainline!!!
It is always good to look around for what people want. My personal interest in GUIs encompasses only a very small fraction of their abilities. For instance, I never play human-engine or human-ICS, and hardly ever engine-ICS. So it could be that lots of trivial improvments are possible there, and I would not even know. Personally it would never occur to me to save the PV in the PGN. But if there are people that want that, why not.
It would be good if Yace was fixed to become compliant with WB protocol. One way to do it would be to have it send feature debug=1, and then prefix every protocol-violating line it sends with '#'. Then it could still continue to print oll the cr*p it prints now, without the possibility it would be picked up by the GUI as a command to do something unintended.

Re: Arena users: UNCHECK save mainline!!!
Saving mainline would be really cool if we could have it done intelligently.
This is what I'd like to see:
1. The option to save each engine's lines independently.
2. The option to save the line only when the two engines disagree by a margin larger than x.

Well, I don't want it and I don't need it. It is of no interest for publishinghgm wrote:So is there any interest to have this in WinBoard (as non-default option)? For it is rather trivial to implement.
in PGNs and if I want to have it for myself I can just look it up in the debug
file, or extract it in 2 seconds via LGDEBPGN into a private PGN.
