As I start a new tournament, it seems to try to load something (little circle spinning - this is Vista 64-bit), then just freezes.

OK now, deleted and reinstalled everything, may have been a configuration compatibility mismatch.

...but, although I saved the ChessGUI_engines.txt file and reinstated it after installing, I lost all engines and had to reinstall them.

You saved the wrong file !
ChsGUI_Eng.TXT is the right one.
