hello friends of computerchess
since a few days I am running a tournament with the top engines (compared to the rating lists) . Conditions are
all engines 4 cpu
all the same book, 12 moves max.
1024MB hashtables
ponder ON (!)
running on an Intel X5365 octa pc. Crosstable daily updated.

I appreciate your efforts, but sudden death games among engines of similar strength don't have the high endgame quality of games with big increment per move or time control x/y.
"40moves/20mins repeating" will give you better endgames than 90mins/game because time trouble is totally avoided.
Better endgames of course equates to better classification of engines according to strength.
Best,
Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Hi Matthias
there are a few good reasons to play with increment.
Most reason for me to play without is that I want avoid hours of "draw-nonsense". Also important is ponder ON.
Btw. the games are interesting so far what I have seen

there are a few good reasons to play with increment.
Most reason for me to play without is that I want avoid hours of "draw-nonsense". Also important is ponder ON.
Btw. the games are interesting so far what I have seen

The examples you have posted are OK because the games are already heading towards a clear decision at move 40.
Bad games at sudden death are the ones which stay equal till move 150 or later, then one engine gets into time trouble and loses a game that would be a draw, given adequate increment.
Best,
Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Re: tournament of top 8 engines running
If the game is lasting until move 150, then it's already a bad game. Too many engines play way too stupidly about the 50 move rule. If you haven't moved your pawns for 49 moves, why should they start moving now?Matthias Gemuh wrote:
