First participation at CCT

Post by mathmoi »

Hi,

Tommorow will be my first participation to a online tournament with my engine MatMoi. I'd like to know how will things work, like, how are the game started? Is there a particular chanel I should join? How many time before the start of a round should I get online?

Things like that.

Thanks and good luck to the participants.

PS : My predictions is that MatMoi will finish last, so it's good news for you all, whatever happens, you should not be last :)

Log on to ICC 20 to 30 minutes before the first round.

Make sure your engine kibitzes - test this out tonight.
Kibitz help can be found here: http://taccl.org/kibitzhelp.html
set your variables properly - allowkib and so forth.

Join channel 64 - that is the programmers channel we will all be there
and that is where announcements will be.

finger CCT10 (fi cct10)

learn to use the commands: say and tell from reading help say and
help tell.

to say something to opponent: say something.........
To tell a person something: tell username something.......
to tell all channel 64 something: tell 64 something..........

Log in to icc about 1/2 hour early, and type "+chan 64". Channel 64 is the computer chess discussion channel. You can talk to people there by typing "tell 64 message....." and you will see replies.

You should always set your formula when you log in as per Peter's instructions to try to avoid someone starting a non-tourney game before a round starts. If the manager works properly, games will start automatically, although this does not always happen. If not someone will tell you what to do.

make sure you have played some games prior to tomorrow to avoid any last minute bugs/surprises.

Has the manager been improved? It used to be the case that at least one of the two players would have to issue a match command.

To newcomers: Go to the ICC website, put a link to it in your browser, and find out early where the "help" pages are. And look up the syntax for the "match" command, because you might need it.

Thanks to all three of you for your answers. How can I set my formula so no one can start games with my engine, but it will still start games from the tournament?

Note that WinBoard can kibitz for you, if your engine does not kibitz itself.

Just add the -autoKibitz flag in the command line. (Like -ics, -zp and all the other ICS options it is not saved in the winboard.ini!)

You will then also see the opponent's kibitz in your engine-output window, rather than in the main ICS communication window, and your own kibitz will be suppressed (as you see your own engine's thinking output in the engine-output window anyway). So the ICS interaction window is not cluttered by all the kibitz lines, and can be reserved for following the discussion.

I am guessing you cannot log on as a guest to watch these, but have to sign-up for the two weeks trial or pay?

You can...just use dasher, select "register" and close the registration webpage. You will be logged in as a guest. No need to get an account.

You will not be able to talk or kibitz, though.
